Louisiana Saddle Hunter's Thread

I would just love to see two bucks tags instead of three and less rifle days or purely lottery rifle on a few WMAs. Thistlewaite during the 4 on one side days was awesome to hunt compared to now. I don’t particularly care for a point rule but those restrictions made a huge difference.
I'd like to see it go to one. States that have gone to a one buck limit are moving up quick in the number of big bucks being killed. Destination states have restricted buck harvests to put age on them. The other thing going for them is food in the form of agriculture, but you can get high quality food without ag. That's where habitat comes in. I've seen absolute giants in Louisiana with no ag around. But age is extremely important. So, curtailing the buck harvests to a point where you get more bucks advancing to older age classes is an important step that other states have implemented. Many Louisiana hunters may not want older age bucks, and would rather just any buck. So, LDWF manages for maximum sustained yield instead of a more even age structure (unless you're in DMAP and manage for older bucks).

Agreed. What people seem to forget is hunting is for sustainment not trophies or any of that bull. You can’t eat horns lol I was raised as hunting is for food PERIOD. And trophy hunting or sport hunting is shameful in my eyes. And don’t even get me started on the commercialization of what used to be a staple way of life.

I hunt for older bucks because they are older. And, I do like big antlers that some older deer can produce as prime specimens of their species. I don't apologize for that at all. I enjoy eating them too. I do lots of conservation work to promote a balanced age structure, herd dynamic, and habitat. I understand the hunters that just want any deer too though because they enjoy eating it. I think both types can be satisfied. Both types should put habitat as a priority, because without that, there aren't deer for either one.

Yes I feel the same, and I get what you’re saying when I say trophy or sport hunters I mean the guys that literally only hunt for the sole purpose of putting something on the wall that’s what I have a problem with. If a buck walks out of course id drop it but for the meat not the horns, id trade my name in the record books for 3 doe tags of meat any day of the week.

If you think Louisiana cares about it’s wildlife you better think again. Look at the newly appointed LDWF head. That’ll tell you everything you need to know. A 26 year old female from South Dakota that has no qualifications in any aspect of biology, conservation, or knowledge of our La culture. Not sure what Landry is thinking but this ain’t good leadership. Gonna be another long four years

Not many if any LDWF heads had a wildlife background. They have always been apointed positions for the govenors pets and colleagues that did not get reelected. They just have to be managers, the commission members are the ones to worry about.

Yes I’m aware. I was just using the most recent appointment as an example. The whole system needs to be restructured.

thought this was pretty funny - sex offender was hiding out in Sherburne from the po-po.

Should have just put a gps tracker on him and told him to stay out there and out there only. Now we gotta start feeding him again.

If we have to keep them alive id rather them in prison and let the others sort them out. I ask every cop, DA and judge I know why we keep these pedos alive and they’re all on the same page with me so then I ask, “well then who the hell is making these rules if not y’all!?”. Makes me sick.

You wont get any argument from me but if we already turned him loose, I'd prefer he stay somewhere devoid of people with a chance the feed the bears or gators. I guess they could have staked him down on the bank of the bayou and hung a half a chicken around his neck.

Yeah and I’d say also the people who agreed to free him should join him.

I would vote to remove jail time as an option for child predators. The problem is the approved means of capital punishment are too lenient. Maybe stake em down naked on a bed of fire ants or some such. If this comes across as harsh, I'd suggest serving as a juror in a child sexual abuse trial and then get back to me.

Not harsh enough, I like the fact when they go to prison there’s honor among thieves and they mostly take care of child or women abusers. I’ve always said besides that public skinning of them will send a message.

I wonder how many hunters saw the camp before reporting it. There’s people everywhere out there, no matter where you go somebody at some point is going to see you. As a friend put it about LA public, the further you get from one access the closer you get to another

I hope I'm not being "that guy" by asking but Im looking at doing an instate trip to somewhere in the Delta. was wondering if anyone would have anything to offer about Spring Bayou, Lake Ophelia or Sonny Gilbert WMAs. Seems like they don't get hammered and have a fairly restricted gun schedule (particularly Lake Ophelia).

Might ask for PM responses only

can only speak to JC Sonny out of those....good area to check out for sure, one of the biggest bucks ive ever seen was out there. That area in general i would say has a nice deer population. I would see multiple deer all over driving through there. JC is SUPER steep, maybe even more so than Tunica so be prepared for that. The last time i went out there i went during the week right before thanksgiving firearm season and was literally the only person out there.
