So I have one of these I acquired here. Been tinkering with it. I’ve come to learn that it is a fantastic device. I use my Grigri + for now. Not here to debate the safeguard, but with safeguards so hard to come by, I’m curious why more people are not using the Mamut Smart 2.0.

Comparing the Mamut to the Grigri and other similar devices, it’s easier to be quiet with the Mamut Smart 2.0, for sure. I think it’s smoother than the Safeguard too, especially as the weight of the load is increased. Not bashing the safeguard, I just don’t think it’s the best device for our application. Works fine. Just better options. And again, with the challenges of finding a safeguard in stock, why are more not using the Mamut Smart 2.0.

What rope are you using with it? Been thinking about trying it.

I been thinking of trying it but since I got rid of my safeguard and settled on figure 8 per @phatkaw method using CIV and good ol oplux I’m finding it hard to pull the plug on the mammut. I would like to try the grigri plus eventually since I have no experience in that but these might be after the season unless I can find one sooner

If I remember correctly I think it’s rated for 8.7 to 10.5mm rope. Oplux is 8mm???

Not sure what’s it rated but I use my figure 8 with oplux every time now when I hunt except for once when I used the CIV and that work great as well. Smooth descent all the way in both ropes and was able to easily lock down to grab my stick and unlock. I lean back slightly and grab the 8 and push slightly to open it up to lock or unlock and rappel down. A lot better descent than the safe guard and no noise to boot

I just recently been playing around with the Mammut. I'm using 9 mm HTP. I have noticed a difference in carabineers. Curious what others are using with this device.

I have a safeguard and my only complaint is it's jumpy. I weigh 260# and it's hard to smoothly release the safeguard without it popping. I have tried different sized rope but it doesn't seem to matter. So you say the Mamut Smart is smoother than the Safeguard even with more weight? Does it jerk at all?

It does. But nothing close to the safeguard. I think you may also like the Grigri +. It is smoother, and the panic feature will prevent you from pulling too hard or fast and falling to the ground. Best device I’ve used. The Mamut is fairly cheap. Try it out. Can buy it new with its carabiner for $60.

If you want, and you promise to send it back, I’ll send it to you try out.

That is very nice of you! If you think it's smoother than the safeguard I will buy one, but thank you for the offer. I have four different size ropes that I can play with. Do you think a Gri gri is smoother than the Mamut?

I got the silver/pink one on mountain steals site for $25. Just used some stealth strip to pretty it up. I believe the site is moosejaw closeouts.

That’s kinda comparing apples to oranges in that they’re both fruit. The grigri is an assisted braking device whereas the Smart is a passive braking device, both are used for belaying. I’ve used both, I still have and use my Smart and am messing with a safeguard. My thought is the safeguard is moar fancy with bells and whistles and the ahhh factor of using a handle. Maybe people don’t trust how easy the smart is to use. It’s also relatively inexpensive so that could be another factor. It’s cheap so gotta be junk.
I’m using mine with 9mm canyon elite with no issues.

I think it is, but how I actuate things and my impressions may be different than yours. I’d hate to see you buy it on my suggestion and it not work out for you. It will work, but whether you believe it’s better or not, is very subjective. But for me, I believe it to be smoother and not as jerky.

The lever on the grgri+ begins releasing the rope a little sooner and at a different angle than the Safeguard. I think that’s what makes me feel as if it’s smoother. I’ve popped open the safeguard and nearly fallen if I hadn’t released the lever. That’s a non issue with the Grigri+

Well after this I did some research and ended up ordering the Grigri +. My issue with the Safeguard is I very gingerly try to release the rope to repel but it always gives me a jolt that I don't care for. With the Grigri + it looks like it doesn't. Like everything else if I don't like it I'm sure I can sell it.
Thanks for your help.
