Hey all, Already got a buck this year early season. Now with the rut coming up I thought it might be fun to get out there and try a setup or two with these Buck/doe Montana decoys I bought a while back. I also took the tarsal gland from the buck shot, and took out some wax from his interdigital glands. I was thinking to drag in some of the interdigital gland, and then set up the buck and doe decoy with the tarsal gland attached, and spray a little bit of tinks 69. Now, Ive never used scent or decoys when hunting. Wondering if any of you had any good/bad experience with this kind of setup. Would love to hear what worked, what didnt, if its a waste of time.. or a good idea :)

Just one of my latest and coolest experiences with my Montana doe:

Plus the post above it and I detailed another encounter the same night with some does.

End of season, I had a few great encounters over Miss November. And a number of times I have used it to stalk or hide on the ground. I have been holding it in front of me, sideways, and walked to within 40 yards of does that just couldn’t figure out why that skinny legged deer was moving so funny.

This is not always the case. Sometimes the decoy really spooks them. But it’s still a learning experience. I’d say when it works, it can really work. But at the very least you may be able to use it to distract a deer juuuuuust long enough to get a shot. I like to position my decoy like 10-20 yds away and so deer coming from at least two possible directions will look at IT instead of ME, hopefully broadside if I’ve done my job right. I want the best two trails leading away or sidelong to my tree and leading right to the decoy. Or put that thing right in the most obvious place in open spaces like a food plot.

And on public land, go ahead and get aggressive, have fun with it.

Thanks!!! Do you ever use scent or take any measures to de-scent the decoy?

I’ve done both. I can’t say either really works or doesn’t. I don’t wear gloves or anything but I used to, and I’d spray with scent killer, buck bomb the area, hang wafers from her cankles…Now I mostly just keep her the garage where she gets lots of daytime air and only gets touched when I’m about to hunt with her. I’ve used Deer Dander on trees and brush near her, and I believe it did work once or twice. I’ve also peed in scrapes near her and I don’t have evidence for or against, so if I have to pee and she’s with me, she gets the best seat in the house and I climb the tree a few pints lighter.
