I think I'd agree.... Unless u found a used 1 at a decent price it would probably be smarter purchase to look into something more modern. I think u could probably get all the individual components and piece an Alice together for cheaper than buying a complete pack.....I see the more modern molle pack that has the frame that jx3 uses for pretty cheap looking thru surplus stuff. I never used that 1 but if assume it was just as good if not better
I've got both large ALICE and MOLLE packs. I prefer the medium ALICE, with or without the frame, depending on the task at hand. I don't particularly care for the MOLLE pack setup for hunting. The separate, bottom sleep system carrier is unnecessary unless you're carrying a sleep system or tent or some such. Would work for layers, but do you really want to carry bloody deer parts above a stuff sack full of warm clothing? Also, the top flap is comically huge and gets in the way unless you're using it to hold a bunch of stuff (ex sleeping mats, mortars, ammo, etc) on the top of your pack.
I see there is a next-generation packsack that does away with the separate lower bag in favor of a lower entry or partition to a single bag, similar to the Kelty backpacking packs we may remember from our youth.
I prefer the MOLLE pack frame and suspension as it provides for lifters, and the ALICE suspension is kinda cheezy in comparison. As a rucksack, I prefer the medium ALICE and am slightly heartbroken that I can't find mine. It's the perfect size, excellent pocket layout, drawsting and flap closure - no zippers or snaps or other noisyness, it's basically perfect for hunting.
Toying with the idea of an off-season pack bag project to fit on one of my pack frames.
