I seem to have misplaced my Medium. Damn shame, it was my favorite pack for many years. Almost bought a knockoff made by Fox or Rothco but the fabric was just too chintzy.

The large has three smaller pockets below the lid and above the main bottom pocket.

This is exactly why I started using the Alice pack. I watched some of your videos and picked one up and I've been doing it ever since. My back and I thank you Mr. Womack!

I'm glad to know that it works for you too. I started field quartering and packing deer out during the 1982-83 season. Back then there wasn't much too choose from in regards to packs, like it has been for the last few years. The surplus military ALICE pack seemed to be my only option. And, it worked great. I now have a nice modern pack, but my ALICE pack is still my choice for getting a deer from the field to the vehicle.

Do they get in voluntarily now or do you still have to kilt 'em to death first? ;)

Here’s my ALICE Large on a bullpac frame. I added the plate to the frame that the Alice pack “sleeve” slides over. I feel
Like I could carry a car with this thing.

I honestly can't remember when or how I acquired mine....I've had it since I was a teenager. It's been everywhere...30 miles out in the ocean, homeless couch to couch, on top of a glacier, and carrying critters outta the jungle...plus whatever life it had before I acquired ...It's probably not the best but it definitely not the worst.

When I'm a guest on a quota permit that we have to share a vehicle I throw all my hunting stuff, minus the weapon and boots, into the pack so I can switch vehicles easily. If I'm going hunting in a place I can carry the animal out I bring it along. I leave it at the truck/boat and go retrieve it if I'm lucky enough to kill something. Kill kit, hoist/gambrel, pillow cases, and a small tarp...but it's main use is a camping pack. Either hiking in to remote campsite or pulling up to the campsite in the truck that pack totes all my equipment easily.

Looks like the medium would be sufficient to tote a deer?

Why did you have to go and say all of that. Seeing it has somewhat of a self and watching @WHW videos, I now need one. Where is the best place to pick one up from?

[QUOTE="Weldabeast, post: 717646, member: 7132" Looks like the medium would be sufficient to tote a deer?

On several occasions I was able to pack out two quartered deer in my medium ALICE pack.

I'll be the negative Nancy here. I have one, upgraded with straps, lumbar and some other mods. I believe it's the "hellcat" mod. The thing looks cool and is certainly bullet-proof. The problem for me is the pack is much heavier than most modern packs and the frame keeps the pack quite a ways from my back, making me feel unbalanced with heavy loads. For the price of finding an Alice pack in decent condition, and then getting all the needed upgrades, you are pretty close to the price of some modern packs. JMO.

I think I'd agree.... Unless u found a used 1 at a decent price it would probably be smarter purchase to look into something more modern. I think u could probably get all the individual components and piece an Alice together for cheaper than buying a complete pack.....I see the more modern molle pack that has the frame that jx3 uses for pretty cheap looking thru surplus stuff. I never used that 1 but if assume it was just as good if not better

I've got both large ALICE and MOLLE packs. I prefer the medium ALICE, with or without the frame, depending on the task at hand. I don't particularly care for the MOLLE pack setup for hunting. The separate, bottom sleep system carrier is unnecessary unless you're carrying a sleep system or tent or some such. Would work for layers, but do you really want to carry bloody deer parts above a stuff sack full of warm clothing? Also, the top flap is comically huge and gets in the way unless you're using it to hold a bunch of stuff (ex sleeping mats, mortars, ammo, etc) on the top of your pack.

I see there is a next-generation packsack that does away with the separate lower bag in favor of a lower entry or partition to a single bag, similar to the Kelty backpacking packs we may remember from our youth.

I prefer the MOLLE pack frame and suspension as it provides for lifters, and the ALICE suspension is kinda cheezy in comparison. As a rucksack, I prefer the medium ALICE and am slightly heartbroken that I can't find mine. It's the perfect size, excellent pocket layout, drawsting and flap closure - no zippers or snaps or other noisyness, it's basically perfect for hunting.

Toying with the idea of an off-season pack bag project to fit on one of my pack frames.
