My take on amsteel gear hanger

I had a typical amsteel gear hanger that I girth hitch to the tree and use it to hold my pack on the tag end and my other gear in the loops around the tree. The problem was the pack weighing down the tag end would pull the loops so tight it was difficult to attach to it. I also do not like leaving clips/s biners attached all the time. With different size trees I prefer to place everything after I'm setup.

This design uses 7/64 amsteel. It has a main line (black) with a loop on one end. The tag end has daisy chain with locked Brummels. These are used to clip my pack in. The orange line then goes to bury, loop, bury, loop. These loop sizes can be adjusted when not weighted, but as soon as I attach my pack the load locks the loops in place, and does not tighten the opening. The loops stay nice and open for clipping into.

I had it up in the tree on a practice climb today and worked as planned. I'll snap a picture in the tree next time I take it up with me.

So it is still attached to the tree in the same manner...girth hitch to trunk? The problem with that is when u don't think about it and grab it backpack and ur bow falls to the ground.

Had that ALMOST happen to be last yr. I need to figure another way to hang my bow

Simple solution to ANY daisy chain gear hanger whether it’s via amsteel or webbing

Just hook one side to your end loop and the other to the closest daisy chain and pull securely. It’ll only release if you press in the release lever. Cinches really tight and 100 lbs breaking strength. It’s fairly light and very packable

Yup same plan to girth hitch to the tree. I've never had the backpack problem personally. My order of operations is to complete unload my gear hanging into my pack, take out my pull up rope and lower my bow before I even think to put my pack on.

No, doesn't the whoopie sling part of it tighten down around the tree trunk?? So you're not relying on the girth hitch to hold your bow and stuff?

Calling it a whoopie is misleading I think, there is no tightening with the loops and buries. The weight of the pack locks the buries which is similar to a whoopie, but this design is still girth hitched

Right....begining and at the end of the hunt u got ur order of operation down....it's the time between first set and taking off....

Man...it's getting a little chilly, let me grab my sweater out of my pack....lean to start to grab ur pack, wait...what's that? Dang squirrel, what was I doing.... Put ur hand on ur pack, was it a squirrel? Look to see and slowly start to get ur sweater out while scanning for movement....dang mosquito...wait...ppsheee, it's just a leaf falling... What was that noise? Oh, it's my bow on the the ground

Easy fix now... Expensive fix later.... Just my advice, take it or leave it

This is exactly why I moved from a girth hitched gear hanger to this.

Oh ok I see what you're saying now.

similar concerns made me ditch the girth method of attachment. I use a nite ize can jam and run my hanger through that. super fast, super secure, stays on the tree even with no weight on it. however, that method for the adjustable loops, GENIUS! Really cool!
