New Hunting Wardrobe Advice

Bumping this thread because my wife just told me she's tired of being married to a man who still wears the clothes he thought looked cool in high school. I was specifically ordered to buy pants and a shirt, and to drop $150. Leaning towards putting most of that towards a nice merino wool top and throwing the rest at another pair of wrangler cargo pants.

Thoughts on the top? I have a lightweight merino wool top already thats appropriate as a cool weather base layer or standalone on summer days. Looking for a bit heavier one. Maybe something like a henley or quarter zip that could stand alone as a casual wear piece at the local restaurant or be worn under something as a heavier "base layer" in the woods on colder days.

I signed up for the Sitka and First Lite pro deals since I think I qualify. I see Kuiu is having their sale @enkriss mentioned last year. Any other deals out there? Sales? Pro deals an editor would be eligible for?

LL Bean Katahdin Iron Work line. They have pullovers, henleys, etc. Versatile enough for chopping wood or dinner at a nice restaurant.
Edit: legendary whitetails makes a flannel lined jacket as well as button up that aren’t bad looking and are warm.

Im sorry but your wife wants you to buy a nice shirt and pants and you signed up for sitka and FL pro deals? lol

Buy a nice shirt that matches whatever color your eyes are and make mama nutter happy

Get some 501’s and spend the rest on short sleeve merino wool t shirts that fit tight enough to layer, not tight enough to show off your cleavage.

I really like a black ovis hoodie I rounded up on sale. I’ll find exact model. It’s public acceptable even in a city of millions. And it qualifies as a mid layer (I wouldn’t sweat in it, I’d layer it on after my walk).

Lastly, I love my asbell wool hoodie as my top layer bowhunting. Dead quiet, and plaid is fine for public. Mines too big to wear in public because I got it for layering, but you can get one that fits a little snugger.

Prana stretch Zion pants are the teets too. I bought 4-5 pairs even used ones in the slimmer fit for my skinny legs. You’d rock the standard cut just fine. Built in waist adjustment and a stupid thigh pocket that opens from top and front that seems silly till you use it. I wear them 2-3 times a week at work and in woods and on dates.

Yeah, but you buy and sell all of the high end gear. "Kink-shaming is your kink."

Seriously though, I'd be curious to know what wasn't worth it and what you went back to.

I have used Sitka since about 2010/2011 tried Kuiu the past couple of years but the consistency in fit is lacking. The durability is also lacking. The tailor loves me though cuz I keep bringing him Kuiu clothing to fix. Had to get the fly zippers replaced on almost all my Kuiu pants. Just disappointing and I will not buy another piece. First lite I tried a few pieces and meh… tried the merino everyone raves about. It sucks makes me so itchy. Best merino I have had is minus33 by a substantial margin. I tried out scentlok this year cuz I get a deep discount. You know what. It may not be the same quality stitching as Sitka but it’s close enough and just as warm. So…. I went with scentlok for a fraction of the price.

hmmm. I can't imagine going from primaloft to thinsulate for insulation and liking it when packing layers. Has something changed there at Scentlok? I can see choosing them for durability though. I have a 10 year old set of Savanna stuff and I'm hunting in it tomorrow.

I think you’re gonna be in the dog house if you take the $150 your wife wants you spend on some adult clothes and try to get some hunting/barely acceptable in public clothes.

I’d say go to belk and get 2 long sleeve saddlebread henleys, 1 izod button down, and two Columbia shirts 1 short and one long. Belk stuff is constantly on sale so don’t pay full price for any of it. Left over money get 1 pair of khaki shorts and 1 pair casual khaki pants. Do not get cargo pockets on either, pfg shorts are great. Only kids, Yankees, and the military wear cargo pockets and you ain’t any of those I don’t recon. That will cover fall game days, spring to winter dinner dates, church if you go, bbqs, beach days, and anything else in between. Your wife will be so happy she will tell you to get some hunting clothes while they are having Black Friday deals.

Scentlok uses primaloft silver and gold in their BE:1 line

I love the legendary whitetail series of tops for shirts, shackets, jackets and the like. Wife loved them on me too.

^thank you full agreement

Prana stretch Zion pants
I've worn these for 8 years and got a few Zion II pants recently, have you tried any of them yet. They seem to have ruined them for me. They fit tight and the pocket lays in front of my knee rather than the side now.

I tried the Zion II as well, big down grade from the originals and mine shredded on the first use, took them back to REI and got my money back. I’ve had great luck with marmot arch rocks

I did the same. I sold my Sitka stuff and for what I got out of just the stratus set I bought multiple sets of scent lok at end of year and 60% off. It’s the quietest clothing I’ve owned and I like shooting deer at sub 15 yds.
