Out on a Limb Climbing Stick!!!!!!!

I'm sure Matt would like that feedback. But don't forget that with rotating double steps, the step increases the overall length when rotated parallel. Making a 22" or so step spacing would create a 30"+ stick. Not sure if that would still be appealing to people.

Regardless, I am just providing an example of the amount of time it takes to execute the task. It's being made out to be a really time consuming annoying thing. Granted, I've only rotated one about 200 times so far, it doesn't seem like a make or break thing. I'd put "fiddle factor" pretty far down the list of things I'm considering if I am looking at these.

I think the fiddle factor comes into play mostly in the dark. You get to the tree and have to remove your sticks from your backpack, then you have to separate the sticks from the stack you carried them in, then you have to turn all 8 steps/standoffs (assuming 4 sticks), then you have to hook them to your saddle or pack for the climb, then you have to put them on the tree.
It is all a good bit of fiddle, and 8 steps worth of unscrewing and re-screwing in the dark will take time and focus.

I do think the form factor of the packing may make it worth it, though. If I were to try a stick like this, I think I like the Tethrd prototype a smidge better at this point... mostly because the steps best together like a frickin glove. I will most likely own a set of one of the two at some point.

All of the things you listed remind me why I don’t like sticks generally, regardless of rotating steps. I guess that’s my point. If you’ve committed to the hassle of sticks, what’s 10% more hassle?

I can not say what each persons threshold for ‘fiddle factor’ is. What I can say is that if I were committing to carrying more than one stick, that extra minute or two wouldn’t bother me enough to notice in comparison to the annoyance of having four or five sticks. It was less annoying than I thought it would be, both on my couch and in my yard. I hope to give it a run this weekend in the deer woods.

I like these sticks especially the weight. I just did not like seeing how much flex they had on that video on fb or the length I would prefer them to be a little longer.

I guess there is a happy medium somewhere on strength vs weight.

I’m currently using 4 modified hawk helium’s with amsteel rope mod. I hate having to take my backpack off, unstrap steps, hang them from my harness and repeat on the way down. I like the idea of these new steps small profile while packed up but does it really matter when it’s strapped to your back pack. Whether stacked together they are 4 inches wide or 10 inches wide, my backpack is still wider so it’s not helping me any. I sure don’t want to add another step of a screw knob to deal with. Total length is what matters more than packable width. It’s a cool concept and looks good but I can’t see them on my back.
I’m still waiting for a game changer public land legal climbing method.

My number one complaint about sticks is not stacking well, second is weight. These look interesting. I love ool mfg
