I'm sold on these straps just ordered two more. Took this nice nine point last night with me recurve.

Dave,

Nice buck what recurve are you shooting? The photo of the carbiners and stuff on the strap is that the one you are mentioning? I wish when I was shooting and hunting with recurves and longbows that I had a saddle I think they mesh perfectly. If you have another picture of the strap and buckle I'd like to see it.

Thanks,

Roger

Roger, this year I am shooting a 55# Caribow Tuktu EX - I absolutely love it. The strap I am referring to is the one Red Squirrel mentioned for a platform strap. This things is far smaller and lighter then the old ratchet strap I used and holds the steps just as good. I am a fanatic about keeping my gear simple, compact and light weight and this strap is one of the best finds thus far. I have five of them now as I know they will be discontinued now that I like them :)

Five!!! Geez, I had the initial one and only bought 2 more

I'm gonna grab 2 more as backups. I covered mine with electrical tape tonight for camo and sound proofing. Worked great.

LOl - that's because every time I find something that I like the manufacturer stops making them. I figure to get enough of these to last me for the next 30 years - don't figure I'll be climbing trees when I am in my 80s :)

So I need to get me about 10 of these and see if they will last three years lol

 I am with you, stock up while we can. I bet we all wish we bought 100 ameristeps while they were in production!

Just ordered (2) of these. I dont have any ameristeps, but will find a use for them.

Nice buck Dave!

I love this buckle too. No issues with getting it tight, and I still find that I have to keep the strap a little loose before I lock the buckle down otherwise I can't lock it.

g2- I am just using the strap from one of the ameristeps. I just removed the stiching that had the step stuck in one spot, put my steps on and put the buckle on the other end.

The amazon boat buckle? My ratchet is acting up and I need to do something different. I was hoping to do the same thing with an old ameristep strap

My ratchet broke so I ordered the amazon buckle rather than buy another POS ratchet.

Just pulled the trigger on a couple of the amazon boat buckles. Also picked up a flat hook from strapworks in an effort to replicate DaveT's approach. Hope it works out!

Thanks for the insight!

I almost have a headache trying to decipher all of this but I'm certainly interested enough to trudge on through. I am tired of the ratchet strap and am ready for another solution. Exactly what are yall describing here? Which buckle/ strap ? Thanks for a great site and a place where us Saddle Extraordinaires can pass along resourceful information.

Yes, I have 5 steps on the old ameristep strap and I just put the boat buckle on the other end (I removed the stitching and the cam buckle so all that is left on the original strap is the hook).

I hope this buckle works for you guys as good as it is for me! :D

I noticed last night that the OCB doesn't work very well on oddly shaped slick bark (beech) trees. The tree was kind of lumpy and the strap couldn't get tight enough. I made it work, but it wasn't ideal to say the least.

Was it a matter of the buckle itself being in a low spot, or spots along the strap didn't seem tight? I havent got mine yet, should have them Friday.

Do you think it was the slick bark or lumpy tree? If I had to guess I would say lumpy tree, I haven't had an problems on beeches. I think with any buckle you will have a problem with a lumpy tree because the strap can't make full contact on the tree to keep it from sliding in spots. I know in his wooden steps thread ADKMTNtrapper had issues with his steps staying in place because they kept the strap too far from the tree and the strap couldn't make enough contact. The only tree I had a problem with so far was a tree with big gaps in the bark, so the step wasn't able to sit firm on the tree.

Definitely the lumpy tree. I've used the buckle twice in a hunting scenario. The first time it worked better on a rounder tree. It's Still not as solid as my ratchet strap, but acceptable. It's fast, simple and quiet.

Ok, just wanted to make sure you still like it! :D When I tighten it down, I make sure I have it so I have to give it a good hard pull to get the lever around. The other day I had it so tight that I would have put it up against anyones ratchet strap, and the advantage was how easy it is to take off versus a ratchet strap when it is that tight.

Yeah, here's a picture, with my total net worth (not including student loans) for size comparison.

Tough to weigh just the buckle without the hook but its about 2-3 oz. Everything in the picture is 6oz. Compared to a ratchet which is 12 oz, bigger and louder!
