Looking into a lightweight packable down jacket to wear as a mid layer when the temps are pretty cold. I have a new pnuma heated core vest I’ll have on and a medium or heavy merino wool base layer depending on how cold it is. Then my scentlok baselayer top. Would like to add a lightweight down jacket next when it’s really cold and long sits beneath my Scentlok outer. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated

Eddie bauer..sign up for their rewards card and watch for the sales on the 800 series down jackets. Weigh nothing and are super nice for the price. Just bought one during the veterans day sale for 50% off. EB is like JC Penny, always a sale going on.

I just bought one of those. Surprisingly warm for the size. I believe it was $30. They also had Eddie Bauer for $50.
I also have this. Hunted all weekend in MN. Last night I didn't even need an outer. I had a merino sweatshirt (first lite Kiln) and then this jacket and an insulated vest. I sat from 2:00-5:00 and wasn't cold. Prob 25-30 degrees. Great jacket and very packable. Well worth the price.

It could have been $30. Even at $40 it’s still a good deal.

Here's how it packs

I have spent ridiculous amounts of money on comparing mid-layers for cold sits in the Northeast. I’ve purchased the First Lite Brooks Down Sweater ($275) the Kuiu Super Down Pro jacket ($350), and the Wiggys Lamilite liner jacket ($60).

My favorite is also the cheapest of them all - the Wiggys liner jacket from Wiggys.com.

I recommend you give that a try and see if you’re satisfied before spending hundreds more for marginally better performance. Based on my experience, you get 90% of the warmth for 20% of the price of the expensive down options.

How’s the sizing on the Gerry? I’m 5’8” 175 lbs. They only have the medium in blue. No small in either blue or green.

I have the first lite uncompagre vest and jacket. They both pack small, with a baselayer, under the jacket and firstlite bibs I have been up a tree in sub zero Temps with wind. I like to be cold on my hike and climb, bibs unzipped, minimal upperware with other stuff strapped to or in my pack. I wouldn't do much hiking in the uncompagre and I consider it a mid layer because I'll put the catalyst jacket Over too for wind and rain protection.

I watched Sierra Trading Post until I got a deal on a Sierra Design 800 fill with dri down treatment. I think I got the $150 down puffy for around $50. I've been happy with it. Watching the discount sites and being willing to use high end hiking brands (not just hunting brands) has saved me some cash.

I have worn tons of different packable insulation layers.

I like the Kuiu Kenai the best for a synthetic as it repels water and stays warm when wet unlike down. It packs plenty small for whitetail hunting and my favorite part of it is it is dead silent unlike most down jackets as they have to be coated to keep the down inside them. Its quiet enough actually i often just put it on over my jack and wear it as an outer layer. As a bonus it is made of a stretchable fabric so it is beyond comfortable and allows you to draw your bow completely unrestricted.

I also use the Kryptek Cirius jacket, it packs down to and weighs almost nothing but can turn a mid weight outer shell jacket into a sub zero jacket with that underneath it. I also have a pair of Kryptek down pants i can pack in and put on when im huntin in really frigid temps and man are they awesome. Unfortunately they no longer make them.

I'm about the same size and the large fits just right. Could probably get an XL if you want to layer underneath.

I’m 5’8”, 160 and bought a large. I like my clothes a tad big so I would think a large or XL would be good.

eddie bauer or outdoor research has some great jackets and you can usually get them on sale. My OR jacket (transcendent jacket, no hood) I think I paid about $70 for it AND they have a lifetime warranty.
