please help me understand some methods of self-rescue in a tree

Thanks everyone. I have a 3 foot long nylon sling that I use as a slack, back up to my tether (girth hitched to my saddle belt and then attached to tree with my lineman's). I'll try it, but that will probably be perfect and all I have to do is keep it handy in a pocket instead of buried in my pack.

This method started as a self recovery method, but it has grown into my climbing method as well. Not that im suggesting you use this, but in a pinch, a 1/8th amsteel foot aider/tether is very compact and can get you out of a bind.

For any of the guys who use rappel as their backup: if you found yourself hanging from your tether for some reason (say your ros strap broke), how would you transition to your rappel line? Dont you still need some method to unweight your tether?
This is where the MR Safeguard comes in, I just girth hitch the rappel line around the tree just below my tether and slowly transition my weight from my tether to the rappel line using the Safeguard. I do that every time I rappel out of the tree after hunting anyway. If my step or platform fell I also have my Lineman's belt at the side ready to deploy. But I could also just girth hitch my rappel line over my taught tether and as far up as I could go and then relax my friction hitch on my tether slowly until the safeguard took over. This is a great question though and got me to thinking.

I climb with sticks and aiders and now hanging steps also.

Let's say I was coming down and didn't have a step or stick I needed (somehow the stick fell off the tree, etc...imagine an unlikely scenario) and couldn't reach the distance.

What are some options for traversing down 4 to 8 feet in a tree like that?

I always climb with a tether and lineman's belt. The tether has a screw link to girth hitch around tree and a distel hitch on a carabiner connected to bridge. The lineman's has carabiners on both sides because I like to fully disconnect while walking and one side has a distel hitch for adjustment. I'm thinking I could hang from my tether, girth hitch the lineman's around the tree using a carabiner, girth hitch the other end of the lineman's around a foot, adjust length of lineman's, stand up, take weight off tether, slide it down, hang from tether again, slide down lineman's girth hitch, rinse and repeat.

I don't want to figure this out in a tree when panicking. Is the above the best method with just a linemans? What am I missing? What can I carry to make self rescue easier? Am I missing an important link/thread here?

Thanks!

An alternative to using a separate loop to take the weight off the hitch or device is the one foot footlock. The rope is wrapped around the foot so that it pitches itself. To use, keep the ankle stiff with the toe pointed down, keep foot below body’s center of gravity and push up. It’s easier to keep the lock near the heel, but not necessary with a little practice.
