Post season workout encouragement thread! 2022 EDITION!!!!!

Tell ya what, I spent last night busting up concrete filled cement blocks with a 12lb sledge and that will make ya feel like the worthless, rotting desk jocky ya are.

Gotta love a job that pays peanuts, robs you of your sanity, and that tries to kill you one sedentary day at a time!
What are you doing, practicing for the chain gang?

Just helping my dad out. Hurricane washed out the concrete retaining wall that kept his 2 ac units level. He was rebuilding it but his back gave out and i'm trying to help him finish up. Mainly just demo work and hauling the old one off for now. He thinks he can handle framing up a new deck for them to go on instead of trying to redo the wall and fill it back in with dirt.

Save me some googling, please. What's the theory behind the sauna?

Guy I bought my house from had one in the basement, but took it when he left. Always wondered what the hubbub was about since then.

I mean this is an article that tells you a list of what it supposedly does. We mainly got one because my wife really wanted it, but I have been the biggest beneficiary.

I had a pretty nasty mountain bike when I was 24 and the pain in my lower back due to the accident really picked up speed around the time I turned 30. Got progressively worse throughout that decade. To the point I was hobbling out of bed in the morning like an 80 year old man. Couldn’t do any type of hinging exercises and definitely no compression exercises (weighted squats, lunges military press, etc..) or jumping/running. I went to the chiro 3xs/week, hired a personal trainer to focus on unique exercises to work around my limitations, went to physical therapy...was continuing to get worse.

Had no idea this sauna was going to help me, but I would’ve paid double or triple what I did to feel like I do now (turning 40 in two weeks) than I did at any point in my 30s. I think it helped alleviate the arthritis that was forming in my lower back.

We got a 3 person MPulse from Sunlighten and I think it’s a bit overkill size-wise. 2 person would be plenty big enough. Expensive, but well worth it for my specific situation.

Disclaimer: I will say Sunlighten’s customer service is not fantastic for how much you are spending.

I am surprised that specific training and PT didnt help your issue but the sauna did. Glad you found something that helped.

Interesting. I wish some of the stuff in those types of articles was more scientific or quantifiable. Just seems hard to believe.

Then again, anecdotes like yours probably convince me more than anything. I feel double my age.

Honestly, I was surprised as well. I think it really did a number on reducing inflammation and alleviating my arthritis that was forming around two bulging discs.

Taking a good digestive enzyme and limiting sugar and bread/wheat is a good starting point to try before investing a lot of money in a sauna.

Anyone use kettlebells for cardio? Looking for something to build stamina, other than running. Thinking after my shoulder dislocation back in November, it might be good to get some overhead work in.

Just did 2 miles in the rain climbing hills. Up and down, up and down. All on a side slope to really give myself the best chance of twisting an ankle.

Considering joining planet fitness again to have access to a stairmaster. Only problem is it's a half hour drive. Still may be worth doing to hit it twice a week and really kick my own azz.
Box steps can substitute for the stairmaster and I know a handy guy like yourself could manage it.

Any ruckers? I've thought about rucking for exercise. I came across GoRuck but it seems stupid expensive when I could just get a pack and some bricks for weight. I'm just not into running but rucking some trails seems like it'd be beneficial for getting up and down the ridges in some of the areas that I hunt.

Long trail hikers say the best way to get into shape for hiking is to hike. Another thing you can do is ankle weights. 1lb on your feet is like 5lbs on your back, something you should also think about when buying your hunting boots. I do weights in a backpack and walk on my treadmill at 10-15 degrees incline. A weighted vest is much nicer.

Had a Concept 2 Rower collecting dust for a few years now. Finally got the ball rolling last month and rowed 60k meters. Going for 80k meters in March and mixing in some weighted and body weight exercises, too.

I’m on the waiting list for a Concept2 Model D rower.
I was kind of getting bored with my routine of hiking, elliptical and TRX bands.

Try to do once a week during the summer building up to elk hunts. I throw a 50# sandbag in the pack and take off for 5-7 miles. Will occasionally bump the weight up between 70-90 pounds and normally stay around 5 miles for those to simulate a pack out. Bleachers and stairs are good if you dont have hills near the house. We have some pretty good hills but still use the high school football bleachers too but that is usually more of a cardio workout. Something like 5 trips running up and down, stop and do 10 push ups or burpees for 10 rounds.

.....that would do me in, and if I’m dead I won’t be able to deer hunt!

I only got 2 runs in last week but plenty of crosstraining- bike rides with 2 kids in the trailer, about 100 lbs total behind my single speed bike, general dadding etc. - note: diy jungle gyms have about 2847372 bolts to assemble them. And going for a walk almost always winds up with 30-45 lbs of kid on the shoulders/back for the second half. Always worth it though.

I am hoping to run a bit more regularly this week, we shall see. As for all of you, strong work, keep it up everyone!

Just to clarify, i'm not elk hunting. Maybe one day hopefully. So i'm not packing anything out usually. Just some of the areas I hunt have some steep ridges and it'd be nice to be better conditioned for those. I ordered one of these packs from LA Police Gear. I'll put some bricks or something in it to add weight.

Best covid related purchase i've made and thats including all the saddle related crap which is quickly making hunting my most expensive hobby.
I got 18lb to 53lb KBs (5 total)

Any free workout reccomendations?
There’s lots of them pushups, burpee’s, mountain climbers, and on an on. Just jump on your browser and type in “(body part) workout” and you will find some programs that don’t require any equipment. If you want to get some equipment you can find it used on craigs list or FB marketplace. One of the cheapest and best all around workout tools are Resistance Bands. You can do a lot of exercises with them and they are about as cheap as it gets.

Slide over you youngsters and make some room for an older feller. My buddy texted me in Jan and challenged me to run a half-marathon in the fall. If it was anyone else I would have just laughed at them but he's that kind of friend (and a Canadian to boot) so I had to man up. I take enough crap from him that I don't want to add to the list. I had already been hiking local mtn bike trails with 45lbs in my pack to train for a Western hunt that so far only exists in my dreams. So I started running again, too. Not easy in Jan/Feb in the north but managed to log some miles in the ice and snow. It's been nice to run on dry pavement the last couple of weeks. I have janky joints so it is always a challenge to add miles while not getting the hip and knees too irritated/inflamed. Not sure if I will be ready for the June 20 date but will give it a shot.
