Post season workout encouragement thread! 2022 EDITION!!!!!

Slide over you youngsters and make some room for an older feller. My buddy texted me in Jan and challenged me to run a half-marathon in the fall. If it was anyone else I would have just laughed at them but he's that kind of friend (and a Canadian to boot) so I had to man up. I take enough crap from him that I don't want to add to the list. I had already been hiking local mtn bike trails with 45lbs in my pack to train for a Western hunt that so far only exists in my dreams. So I started running again, too. Not easy in Jan/Feb in the north but managed to log some miles in the ice and snow. It's been nice to run on dry pavement the last couple of weeks. I have janky joints so it is always a challenge to add miles while not getting the hip and knees too irritated/inflamed. Not sure if I will be ready for the June 20 date but will give it a shot.
Glad you’re diving in! Keep up the grind! Not sure what shoes you wear but check out Hokas, they will help to alleviate wear and tear on the joints.

Anyone use kettlebells for cardio? Looking for something to build stamina, other than running. Thinking after my shoulder dislocation back in November, it might be good to get some overhead work in.

Jump rope and a medicine ball will get you down to fighting weight in no time!

I used to do a routine where I had maybe 10 different sets I would do with a medicine ball. I would jump rope for a minute, do the medicine ball sets, then jump rope for two minutes and the sets again. I would repeat this until I got up to five minutes with the jump rope and every time I did a longer jump rope interval I would increase my intensity.

My heart rate used to be 50 bpm. I used to be in really good shape. Jump rope and a medicine ball.

Any free workout reccomendations?
Keith Weber on youtube. Heard about him on joe rogan . Effective without putting you out of commission.
Primal Swoledier ( meatheadiest name ever) of Onnit academy has some good "flow "
Videos.
Search Chandler Kettlebell, he has some good ones ; also meathead style over stamina
Any wod / "crossfit " app that lets you select kettlebell as equipment.
Easy option is 100 reps of any full body exercise in a day a few times a week.
( kb swings, DL, squat/presses, oh squats , get ups...)

I just went back to the beginning of my two week program and saw a big improvement over the first time around. That is encouraging.

That is awesome and we welcome anyone to take the challenge! Show that Canadian who’s boss!

alot of people over here fallow camron hanes .beastmode style.dudes an exstreamist though.kind of crazy.but still he does alot for promoting not just the health of the sport but the sportsmen.hits the gym alot.but not for leg day.he has a method where he puts an 80 pound rock in a pack and runs to the top of skinners bute.wants his workout to be harder than his packout

Just to clarify, i'm not elk hunting. Maybe one day hopefully. So i'm not packing anything out usually. Just some of the areas I hunt have some steep ridges and it'd be nice to be better conditioned for those. I ordered one of these packs from LA Police Gear. I'll put some bricks or something in it to add weight.

The hills that I hunt here in AR are not bad at all for the most part even though we do have some bad steep stuff. A good bit of my hunting here is on skillet flat ground but I am usually a mile or more from the truck. If it is dry I can bike in to some stuff, paddle in to some stuff and the rest is walking. I am not dragging a deer out of the places I typically hunt so when I kill it gets quartered and packed out.

How is the asylum going?
Going very good, I’m on day 11. Honestly the first two days coming off of regular Insanity were really easy but I had to learn the moves so I didn’t get the full workout. Once I learned the moves and did another time through it was really hard. There’s less breaks, screw jump roping I hate it. Overall it’s a very good all body workout. I haven’t done “game day” yet so that will be the big test.

Nice! What shoes you go with?
I’ve always been an ASICS guy but I switched to Brooks. I can’t tell you the kind of shoe. It felt good when I put in on in the store. We’ll see how well it holds up! I have a weird toe that sticks up on my left foot and it always eventually punches through the side of my shoe. I’m hoping these don’t have that issue.

Switched to Brooks 8-9 years ago. Best running shoe I have ever had. Recently got a pair of NoBull training shoes and really like them for lifting or crossfit type workouts.

Cool! A lot of my physical therapist friends and fellow runners wear brooks, they’re a great shoe! Time to put the miles on em now!

Keep it up everyone, I'm continuing to struggle. Crappy personal life and self sabotage and all that. Sitting on the couch because I'm upset instead of going for a run to change my feelings. Posting publicly because well... I haven't tried that before and here's to transparency. Back on the wagon (again), me...

I'm also an asics fan, been running in kayanos since they were in the single digit versions but always wonder if I should try some other brands. Have always heard good things about brooks. Keep going back to the kayanos because if it ain't broke don't fix it but at 150+ a pair they ain't cheap. I try to buy the last seasons ugly colors on sale because I don't care what they look like, but wasn't able to find much this go around when my neon green/tennis ball color ones wore out.

Question for the real runners out there: What works for you to increase your speed/lengthen your stride/make you more efficient. I am doing ok on my plan for adding mileage (did 8.5 miles last run) but my pace is much slower than it used to be. Obviously I am older, I never was fast, and it is still March but I just feel like I am shuffling more than running. Anything other than hill-sprints or sprint intervals that helped you?
