When I was in the Air Force, NASA contracted with us to spin up alternate landing sites throughout the world whenever the shuttle launched.
We were trained to make entry into the orbiter if it ever landed at our site. During training at Kennedy Space Center, we’d water the manatees with a fire hose and I have a pic (35mm print) somewhere with me resting against the tip of the center tank at the top of the vehicle assembly building (VAB, big NASA building with an American flag on it).
We probably did some training too but it was mostly a 3-day TDY in 4-star hotels on NASA’s dime.
