If you are just rappelling, an ATC plus an autoblock will serve you well. (Search Youtube for examples). This is the lightest, most compact, and simple system I know of.
I’ll be at mass a paluza with a SRT setup! I won’t have years of experience with it but enough to get in trouble
I would think the Safeguard as primary and the ATC and autoblock as backup since its cheap and small. Static rope of your choice between 9mm and 11mm. I have Sterling HTP 9mm and Samson Predator.
It is less likely to uncam because of the lack of a return spring but it can still happen if you remove tension. This happened to me once with the Safeguard this summer. During a practice session I wasn't thinking about it and I wrapped my hand over the top of the Safeguard to use as a handhold to pull myself up. Well once the tension on the rope between my bridge and the Safeguard was removed it uncammed and started sliding down the rope. Luckily I had the presence of mind to let go and it recammed immediately after I had slid a few inches. Definitely woke me up though.I think with a lifeguard you need to back it up but with a safeguard that is not necessary since it will act like a ropeman 1 ascender correct???
I just got the Predator, but its 11.2mm. I think it will be fine. How do you ascend? do you use the predator for rappelling with the safeguard? I have safeguard and thought predator was above size range, i'll have to check. I do really like the predator rope though, thought i'd ask and see how you use it. thx guys!
This technique is called "locking off". It's used during ascent and descent. You are never suppose to let go of the brake strand during use. So when you need two hands you lock off the device so it can't slip. This technique will work fine on a safeguard if you are worried about hitting the deck.I looked briefly at lunch for my Madrock product guide but didn't locate it (I think I found the guide for every other piece of climbing equipment I own though). To be honest I don't remember the "no knots" guidance or how it applied.
The knot I'm using is the one recommended by Petzel for use on the Grigri, essentially the same device as a Lifeguard. The only difference is that instead of using a second carabiner I just put the loop thru the bridge carabiner. This creates a good stopper knot. To be honest I'm not worried about the knot as much as I am about inadvertently releasing tension on the Safeguard and having an uncommanded uncam.
