You can kill two bucks in IL, one bow and one firearm. However as a a non-resident it would be $1,000 for bow and firearm tags.
Really straight wall isn't that big of a difference my Savage 2020 slug gun I use in IL will shoot 200 accurately. The only benefit I see is cheaper ammo, and a little more range, but with that said I am looking at 350 legends.

It’s not $1,000… $76 annual license, $410 combo archery tag and $275 gun. Grand total $761.. I go every November as non resident

I don't really care about the influx of non-resident hunters. I have access and lease different plots of land. I think what will keep most hunters out is the price of a buck tag...almost 500.00 for hunters to take a buck...I know I wouldn't pay that much to hunt something I could get in another state for cheaper.

I’m in Mississippi and for my yearly $85 license I can kill 4 bucks and 6 doe’s in the area my lease is or 3 bucks and 4 doe’s down at southern tip of state where I live.. I still travel to southern Illinois and pay the $485 to kill a buck and also Kentucky for $385 to kill a buck.. Money isn’t everything when you’re doing the one thing you’re most passionate about. It’s the experience because we can’t take this money with us when we’re dead and gone.

IL is #2 for B&C whitetails followed by the most sought after Iowa which is #3 .
So why hunt IA every 4-5 years when you can hunt IL every year with a bow and rifle which has a greater number of B&C kill’s every year.

Or just do both like I do . Hunt Illinois and Kentucky while you build Iowa points and then every few years you get to hunt all 3

For the people that don’t understand why some will drive to these states and pay what we pay to hunt then y’all need to venture to the south and hunt a “coastal” whitetail and then you will understand. A lot of areas in the south have low numbers, nocturnal deer, etc.. I can drive 9 hrs north and see more deer in one day than I see in an entire season in the south. So yes, I’ll pay that money year after year and enjoy myself while I’m there even if I eat a tag. Bow hunting whitetails is what I love so I’ll travel wherever needed to chase my passion

Passing rifle isn't going to draw that many more guys to the state. Most guys that are traveling to hunt are already going to that state to hunt with a bow / shotgun. As far as distance of bullets traveling its a straight wall and you are only gaining around 100 yards of accuracy over a good slug gun. You are always going to have morons blasting away at animals they shouldn't be shooting at no matter what they are shooting. You should be happy they are passing laws for rifles instead of trying to take them away.

I’m with you brother! I hunt public land here in Ga and am allowed 2 bucks and 10 doe. Season basically goes from sept through Jan. I’ll go to ky and pay the 385 but stay at my cousins house and hunt his land so that’s cheap! BUT, If I had the $, I’d go all over the Midwest and hunt them all. I am getting closer to my Midwest bucket list hunt though.

I have 2-3 years left before I can draw Iowa but the points are being bought. I’m with you on the traveling. If I had $ I’d hunt them in every state from September in Midwest to mid February here where I live.

I always liked hunting south ill just for the fact there was no rifle hunting.
If you hunt in IL allow me to allay your fears.

A FACTORY loaded straight walled cartridge's like the 350 Legend or 450 Bushmaster don't have that much more of an effective range than a 12 or 20 gauge sabot round. At best 40-50 additional yards.
If you handload as I do (Most deer hunters DO NOT reload) then using lighter for caliber quite costly specialty hunting bullets you get a little more range from the 450 BM (can't speak to the 350 Legend) but nothing will magically turn a 350 Legend or 450 Bushmasters ballistic performance to be the equal of a 7mm/08, 308 Win or 30/06.

I've killed a few deer as far as 248-250 yards with a 12ga A-Bolt using Federal Barnes Tipped Expanders and lots of deer from 150-200 yards, but 250 yards is where the 12ga sabot tops out. I know this because I spent considerable time and considerable $$$ shooting to 250 yards with 12ga sabot ammo. Not a cheap endeavor I assure you.

Ballisticlly speaking, with factory ammo 250 yards is also where the 350 Legend and 450 BM top out as well, but 200 yards and under is where 90-95% of hunters should and IME vast majority do limit their shots on deer to with shotgun sabot ammo and straight walled cartridges in the 1.7" case length category.

I bought a 45 colt lever action two years ago. Couldnt even get ammo back then when I bought it. I wanted something extremely small and since most of my gun kills are archery range anyhow I didn't even bother with a scope. Havent shot one with it yet but I bought it purely for the option to hunt straight wall areas if I ever desire. On at 50 its like 4" low at 100. It drops quick. PA where I live is whatever you wanna use in the firearms category down to 223. I have a 243 and a 270. I traded a 30-06 because it just WRECKED whitetails. It ridiculous to shoot those animals with a gun like that.
