Roll pouch or dump pouch for repelling ropes?

I'm just playing with rappelling now & I was thinking of leaving a niteize gear tie in a side molle loop to secure rope. And why does everyone carry 40+ feet of rope? 30 would seem plenty- I only try to get above 18' up to 24' at most as I loose clear shots quickly beyond that.

I carry 40’ because in some trees I have a paracord loop preset and often they go over a limb higher than I hunt. I need the extra length to pull the climbing rope over and back down through a tied loop. Hope that makes sense.

@beaston has a thread in the Classifieds that show all of his pouches. I HIGHLY recommend them! Check them out here:

I use one from custom gear modifications. It’s ‘da bomb. I like that it can dump the rope by simply opening the bottom cinch. I like that it is elongated. I like that it holds my rappel rope easily. I like everything about it. Much better than the dump pouch and tool up pouch I had.

Jerry makes quality gear. The highest of quality. I bought my nephew one of his saddles and the craftsmanship and thought in detail is first place. Check his stuff out. You’ll be pleased.

Which one specifically? Could you link it?

This one. He calls it a drop out bag. Which is exactly how it works.

He has a bigger version out but, this one is perfect for my use. Jerry’s stuff is made with the intent to solve the little nuisances that present. Plus, he makes excellent gear. Give it a try. You’ll love it.

I have the CGM drop out bag too. I like it and it's not as tough to re-pack as you might think. If you hunt off your rappel rope you can keep the tag end stuffed in there til it's time to drop it out. I keep two dump pouches on my saddle so this typically rides in my pack but I keep a surpluss of s-biners everywhere. Hook one through the molle connectors on the drop out bag and then just clip it to the molle loop that my dump pouch is connected to.

I started out one sticking with a Beaston roll pouch 2 years ago. I wore it on my saddle on the upper molle in the middle of my back. For the most part I use it one handed behind my back with little issue. In the middle of last season I switched over to a waterbottle pouch however I am planning on switching back to the roll pouch for next season as it stays tighter to the saddle and I can accesses and stow everyting blind, behind my back without having to take my backpack off.
