ROS VS PLATFORM

Two Panel guy here. If I'm scouting and don't have a preset, I usually just use the ROS lately since it's reduced weight and doesn't take up a lot of room in my pack. If it's a preset, I like a platform with at least two steps. It's nice too be able to switch up positions and switching from knees directly into the tree to straddling the tree is a nice change throughout the day.

II change it up ; either or -ring of step / platform just like I alternate 2 saddles to alternate pressure points ,air out straps or pick for planned set up destinations/ length of sits .
I’m 160 lbs and 5’10”. I bet the size human you are sways you on this debate.
A step at 12 o clock gives me the option to take pressure off / make small movements / stand with a hand on tree or tether / or pee.
Also Eberhart pees into a Wide
Mouth bottle which u can do using any foot rest, even if you are a BSD like Mr.E.
I’ve learned it’s important to practice from all set ups and close.
I’ve missed deer, getting too cute with “ walking “ a platform and find I use the ROS to get into position for where a deer should present a
Shot similar to a platform.
often I get a little pinned down when deer are within 20 but that’s me. I still typically can move enough without stepping.
Anyway I’m inconsistent at getting on bucks and much of this movement was out of trad bow range.
Killed deer with the TreeHoppers and plan to prefer the Platform steps this season.
Here is a picture of TreeHoppers next to Platform Steps
I lost my point and I like pictures

I will use a ROS if I know it will be a short hunt, anything 3+ hours I use a platform. I have a tree behind the house that I can sneak in for the last couple of hours of light, I usually have a tree prepped with sticks and ROS.

Alot of good posts. I agree with alot of them.
But I think you can tag a deer or get busted using any of the methods. Too many variables, diameter of tree, how high up, does the deer come in as planned, any back cover and so on.
The big variable is the mood of the deer! I have seen bucks throw cation to the wind during the rut. And I have seen them on high alert for no apparent reason.

I like a ROS if I’m going to use sticks & don’t feel like toting a platform…… use the top of my beast stick & then 4 squirrel steps in pairs 3-4” apart comfortable enough. @elk yinzer ive got a mean corndog profile on a small tree but can still pull it off….. different strokes right….

This is exactly what was looking for in starting this.....various options available, various opinions and good information from guys putting it into practice with practical advice! More info will be greatly appreciated if more folks want to chime in!

I didn’t mention all things being equal I prefer a small platform. But just depends on property, hike in climbing method…..

I prefer a ROS. Maneuvering around the tree is better and closer to the tree so you aren’t skylined nearly as bad as a platform. Especially those platforms with an angled edge to them…eeek

If I use a platform it's almost alway in conjunction with two steps on an OCB, one at 4 o'clock and one at 8 o'clock (if you view the tree as 12 o'clock and the platform as 6 o'clock. If I'm climbing with the WEI Stepps, it's a ROS of three Stepps exclusively (first @ 4, second at 8, and third @ 6; 1 & 2 set @ same height, with 3 set ~6" lower).

Are we talking backcountry go far ,ultralite, all animals.or back 40,edge of the been feild.just replacing the treestands with saddle cuz g2 made it look so cool in his vids.but long distance ,some times high speed mobility, packability ,ultralite, and stealth dont matter .we need at least two catagories of hunting on this forum.actual ultralitestealth .and it dont matter.basicly, back 40,or back country style.so we truly understand a person's goals.

That ain’t a bad idea, having a dedicated subforum titled “Ultralight Only”.
