ROS VS PLATFORM

Yeah...Everyone can learn something from ultra light....cant learn anything in an echo chamber where every, how i stup in a saddle youtube video, is the same......using the same stuff everyone bought and uses.

Exactly. With ultralight, you get:
-Climbing methods: 2TC, etc
-Saddles: pouch setup, etc
-Platforms: ROS, etc
-Packs: Packs, fanny packs, no packs, etc
-Clothing: different materials, layers, etc
-Hunting equipment: Bows, arrows, optics,etc

How much pressure will your setup here take.....will the platform come unlocked?
Pressure? I use an OCB and depending on the type of tree, I usually cam it over twice. Once just snug enough to line everything up and dig in, then one more time nice and tight. THEN I cam down the platform and it’s never come back up. The steps are just as tight and I can go all the way around the left side of the tree for example and have my right foot against the step….need enough tether length to do that but I keep mine kind of long. My platform with 2 steps and the OCB is the one thing I don’t see ever changing.

A pine tree with softer bark may take 3 or 4 times to dig in, and I’ve actually retightened it one time after sitting a few hours. I will get a new platform probably by the end of this season, but I’ll set it up exactly the same way for sure.

ROS for me. I sit in a dryad drey so I’m basically sitting in a hammock as is. Having steps works better for that than a platform. On a long sit I take a 1 step so I can lean a little more comfortable. Typically it’s about 3/4 sitting and 1/4 leaning to get a break from sitting. The platform (even a small one) is nicer to lean on but for what I do, a ROS works for most situations. It’s fairly rare anymore that I’m out more than 4 hours and for that a ROS works great.

I'd like to use a ROS, but most of the trees I hunt from, going around the trunk isn't an option because of limbs coming off the trunk or trunks/limbs of other trees too close. I need to use the platform to be able to turn to shoot multiple angles.

Still contemplating getting one to try, but I'd only take it in when I know exactly where I'm hunting and there's an appropriate tree. Fortunately, when I mark a potential tree to hunt from, I make a note that it's either a saddle tree or a tree for my climber. The climber trees would be great options for the ROS.

I'm a 2 panels guy. But I tried ROS a few times and I can't say it's for me. A few steps along with a platform is great but due to the fact that one of my main criteria is feet comfort, just steps themselves hurt after a while. I have been converter to the Croc Cult, I hike in with a comfortable pair of hiking shoes and switch it out to a pair of Croc once I'm in the tree. Standing on a large platform and being able to pee against the wind while in Croc probably is the biggest luxury in the tree for me. I know some guys 2TC and ROS with Croc but I just cant.

Wait, what??? Against the wind in Crocs?

To be honest.both walking around trees like a dog sniffin to pee on a ros,and spinning around like a Ballerina on a platform, are both over rated, and extra movements.....to much for the blacktail woods.....i have found that going back to setting up to one side like traditionole treestang guys is more effective at not being busted

Understand where you are coming from but…… If it’s not a Strong side shot with either method there is a degree of movement with both methods(tree stand and saddle).
Trick is getting into position before the animal is in range….. if possible.

ROS is more stealthy than a platform as you can use the tree as cover better.

I think back cover is more important than front cover. Most ground hunting setups I do involve setting up with a big tree behind me.

I have the predator, the predator xl, and several ting of steps. I’m thinking a platform with a step to each side would be the best comfort to me but I can’t get over how clunky it is so I’ve never actually hunted with it. I’m usually more comfortable with a ROS than a platform. The platform shines when I’m on a severely leaning tree. I’ll also use the platform when I’m in my fourth or fifth day of all day lots. After about three days everything hurts and I need to change some things up.

Didn’t somebody release extra large steps last year? I’d like to try them for my first two steps next to my stick but can’t remember who makes em… anybody know?

*maybe it’s the Bullman platform steps? They about as big as we can get?

I tried those bullman platform steps and with an OCB I personally felt like they slid all over the place. Probably my error on some part.. maybe I'm just used to golden buck steps.

Ah interesting, thanks.

If you don't have a ROS incorporated into your system you ain't doing this saddle thing right. You might as well just use a lock-on. The whole point is to hide your body with the tree and shoot completely around it. You can't shoot 360 degrees with enough stability to be accurate on a tree much bigger than a volley ball without a ROS. Pirouetting like a ballerina on a platform to get a shot is a good way to get busted and/or make a bad shot.

I use a two panel as well, Overwatch Transformer. It is great for sitting and leaning.
