Saddle Fall

Can't tell what knot it is, but an overhand on a bite has no place in this application. It should be a figure 8 on a bite with at least 2" of tail

What's wrong with an overhand on a bight, so long as there is sufficient tail? Isn't it just tougher to untie once loaded?

Most people feel your way including this accident victim.
I test all my knots, stay tied in ground to top to ground. Stopper knots everywhere, or sewn eyes. Not disparaging you buddy. I hope I'm still saddle hunting in 30 years.

That is correct. Also more prone to slippage when weighting and un weighting regularly if not really well "set".

No offense taken. I have been sitting in tree a half mile in thinking how would I feel laying on the ground disabled with my backup tether still in my pouch. At that point, I put it on. :mask:

@nockedup is ur friends stuff still out there or did u take it out for him? A pic of the tether could help us understand a little better maybe what happened....

The loop knot just untied....so like the tether is now.just a straight piece of rope with the stopper u tied at 1 end?

I grabbed the stuff down yesterday. I should have taken a picture of the rope. There is a single over hand knot where the loop should be, with a visible gap where the rope slipped thru the knot.
The rope ended up on the ground with him as it was still attached to his bridge via the carabiner

I feel the same way. The soft ground cushioned his impact for sure. There was a visible indentation where he landed.

Glad to hear he is being discharged and moving around a little. Positive thoughts to him and his family and wishing him a speedy recovery.

Sounds to me like he tied an overhand on a bight himself with a very short tail and didn't pull it tight to lock it down... Maybe?

I have climbed over fallen trees on the ground thinking this might not be good.

Can't say for sure, but it looks like that. If you can zoom in on the picture of him, you can see there is no tag end on the knot forming the loop.

He was very lucky you were there. I hope he recovers 100% and quickly.

We’re all very luck you were there and have such great pictures before the accident. Several things wrong and concerning in the picture.

Thank you for sharing the details, story and pictures.

I can tie an insane amount of knots from my climbing and canyoneering days. But I don't like knots. They reduce the strength by a pretty large margin. They need a decent amount of tail. They are bulky. They can slip. When there's an option of sewn or spliced, I always choose it. I don't care what the cost is. That's just me. In a tree stand you climb onto it, stand/sit and the only time an accident can happen is if you lose your balance or your stand fails. In a saddle the first thing you do is lean back effectively losing your balance and trusting yourself and your equipment. Both are dangerous in different ways. Saddle hunting needs a lot practice and proper equipment. We need to believe that to be safe. I'm glad Mr. Conner is doing well. Super scary.

I’m up in the tree now and happened to look at this. I use the supplied tether that came with a Muddy tree stand harness a few years ago. It came from the factory with no tail on the overhand bight. I’m hooking up my rappel rope now
