I've gotten to a place with gear where I run it through the lens of a few questions before buying:
  1. Will this help me actually kill more/better deer?
  2. Will this make me noticeably more comfortable during my hunts?
  3. Will this make my hunts more fun in some meaningful way?
If the gear/clothing doesn't check at least one of those boxes, I can pretty easily talk myself out of buying it.
But without buying it and trying it how will you know if it’ll meet questions 1 & 2

I see the upside, gotta get one of those.

Plus, it's a conflict free purchase.

The sort of thing you can give as a gift to your wife for gardening, and then borrow during her off-season.
Kids sleds are only $20 and are nearly identical to Jet Sleds (other than being blue or red instead of camo)--even better than a wheelbarrow!

How NOT to answer those.
1. It has to. The AD shows a guy dragging a big ol buck..
2. Has to. I read a review on SH. 1 guy out of 30 says he can sit all day.
3. Thinking about new gear and using new gear totally stokes me to hunt. Winner winner.
See. I helped you out.
So @TNbowhunter do you think you have a problem?? :) ;)
Haha I've done pretty well sticking to those questions lately. Honestly, though, the main thing that keeps me from buying more hunting gear is that my wife would then feel free to spend equal amounts on home décor, so even if I buy something on sale, it's effectively costing me double that price... :coldsweat:

Not that it’d save you money to do a shoulder mount, but antlers on the wall ain’t decor? Two birds with one stone.

(…says the guy who’s antlers still sit on his freezer.)

The struggle is real. I just bought a kuiu bag on Wednesday for 15% off and by Thursday I was already considering replacing it with a Pop Up off of camofire. My excuse is always, well, I'm goign to buy this at some point in the next year and this deal that's right in front of me is exactly the deal I was waiting for; who knows if there'll be another deal like this before I need it. When I started into this saddle thing around Thanksgiving the plan was to spend no more than $1,200 spread over 6-9 months to be funcitional for practice by June and ready to hunt by September. That budget point is long gone and the list continues to grow. I try to tell myself that I'll get better when the list is complete, but something tells me that the list will never be complete.

I'm really trying to do better about tinkering this offseason and focus more one scouting and getting access to private spots. I did get a Windwalker from Treehopper and i've picked up a couple of smaller items. I wanted a slightly bigger pack than my old Redhead day pack and found an XOP Striker on the classifieds. I've also got a couple of packs of broadheads on the way, not that I really needed them but got some Swhackers for $20 and wanted to try Musacchia. I think i'm content with my EDP and Recon, especially considering I haven't even had the chance to use them on a tree. I may get some of those Tasco cameras. Otherwise I think i'll save my pennies for now and purge some things that I don't like/use. Maybe put it towards a lease if I can find one for a reasonable price or get a KY tag. Working on organizing my garage and coming across some things that will probably go.

Less is more in most aspects of life. Hunting isn't any different. Also like the idea of getting the wife something nice.

Bro, you live once- enjoy your life to the fullest for you. If a man gets up and works and pays his taxes, that man can do as he wishes with his hard earned money. Better than buying scratch off lotto cards. Gear may lose value, but it still has some value.

I think this words have been spoken by a number of us on here. Sold it to my wife by saying. I'm gonna sell these ladder stands I set up, and hunt with one mobile set up. It will pretty much be a wash. Yeah. Not so much..

putting more time in this year scouting and preping tree/areas is my plan all while trying to dial in a system that works for me. That said because I've only saddle hunted for 3 years I'm still dialing a system I'm guilty of trying new gear all the time. O well . The wife always knows I'm in the woods and not in a bar so it could be worse lol

Exactly the point I make with my wife....
You just have to think of 3 or 4 really expensive bad habits, like smoking, gambling, drugs, etc.... Then say, "See, I've saved about $300 a month by not doing all those things plenty of other people do, so I'm saving money by only spending $299 a month on gear!"

Add a 4th one on your screening questions: Am I buying this because I need it, or just because it’s a killer deal on the SH classifieds, and don’t want anyone to beat me to it? Lol

This is the exact calculation I have to go through also. Lol

I'm headed down the road this morning to buy a soft topper for my truck. Wife wanted to go to stop at some outlets on the way home.

New price of topper $850.

used price is $300+$300 at outlets= $600

That's a $250 savings and a happy wife. I win.
