The SH Membership has gone live. Only SH Members have access to post in the classifieds. All members can view the classifieds. Starting in 2020 only SH Members will be admitted to the annual hunting contest. Current members will need to follow these steps to upgrade: 1. Click on your username 2. Click on Account upgrades 3. I think we all probably have different levels of internet caution. Personaly I'd probably be happy with a user name and date. It's unique enough to be tough to forge.
Another possibility is to get the seller to agree to not requiring F&F as payment if you cover the 3% in the price. At least then you have some recourse. With F&F you're out if you get scammed with no possible means of recourse.

Asking for something particular in the pic does prove that they have possession of the item. I got that idea from my fishing camp neighbors wife. He told her he had picked up a nail in his tire and could not get it fixed until Monday, so he would have to stay another night. He sent a pic of the flat tire during the conversation. She told him to roll it on the pier, stand by it, put his wallet on his head , have someone else take pic and text. I can only imagine what he had done before for her to need that pic and another witnesses phone number!

Buying from newbies I sometimes choose to pay the 3% Goods And Services Paypal which is almost insignificant on items less than 300$ to me. That gets you the insurance that if you do not receive the item I.e. the scammer can’t prove he sent the item and it was delivered PayPal will refund the money.
I will say that everyone I’ve bought and sold with has been top notch thus far and I’ve bought and sold 20+ saddles.

I always recommend using goods and services. I personally always use it because I only have my PayPal account connected to my credit card. If I use F&F, I have to pay the 3% anyway. It's not foolproof but, it does add some level of protection. Like @gcr0003 said above, on most purchases 3% is insignificant and is cheap peace of mind.
It's still not bullet proof though as I have heard of scammers mailing empty boxes and using the tracking number as proof they sent the item, so taking other precautions like the sellers name in the picture is a good idea.
Edit: And message a mod if you know someones a scammer. This guy tried to scam a bunch of people at once. I think all of the mods had messages about him and @redsquirrel was able to ban him pretty quickly.

No there have been a few, not nearly as many since the pay to play as members....... agreed if someone has a low post count or reaches out to you have some dialogue to vet some of this stuff out. I pay goods & services for almost everything. Makes it a lot easier. I do remember the one guy that got scammed here, the crew made a pot & ordered him a new saddle! Great crew here.
I got hit by Ron Thomas yesterday. I'm looking for the Weatherby bibs. He spent 45 minutes sending me pics of everything but. Best thing was the first thing he tried to sell was a gun. Definitely shady as ...

It's a shame that some people would do that. People work hard for their money and for someone to try and basically steal your money is disgusting. I get so mad when I read about things like this. Be very careful when doing any transactions online. Thank God are group has been really good in this area.

Kidding of course! But the guy sounds like a real turd..... I’ve had nothing but good experiences as far as buying and selling so far. Like Boyne said tho, if I have any doubts, I pay the extra fees to cover my butt.

They're not necessarily a sportsman. There are people who just sign up for online forums and try to scam people out of their money. If you start asking questions they don't always have knowledgable answers on the equipment.
Curious if the guy bought a membership or was just PMing folks when he saw there WTB ads? I usually only buy from members but I’ll sell to non members. That’s another way to mitigate getting scammed
