Sewing Machine Help

Hey guys, I am absolutely new to the sewing game. I will definitely utilize past threads with information in them to help me start and get past the learning curve.
My main question is, will a Bernina Aurora 440 QE be sufficient in what I need?
The sewing machine was my grandmothers and she loved to quilt and such. I know that it can do well with designs and artsy stuff. But I did not know if it would be robust enough for the needs of saddle making and modifications.
With my current mantis, I want to add the comfort channels to it. I have one inch tubular webbing that I would Add small plastic balls inside and sew them separate. Then I would sew the whole piece of tubular webbing with the Plastic balls inside completely onto the bridge loops. Would that sewing machine, with the correct thread and needle, be able to go through and sew on the tubular webbing to the already thick bridge loop webbing on the mantis?
Thank you for your input and advice. I am looking forward to getting it started and start sewing. And making my equipment even better. Thanks guys.

Does your machine have a wheel on the back end that is driven by a belt or is it all contained inside a case where you can not get to it?

I think you may have a little trouble with the footer clearance getting the current bridge loop with an additional doubled webbing through the dog. Maybe a speedy stitch would be the way to go?
I didn’t think about the clearance in the footer. I will have to take that into consideration. Like I am new to the sewing. Will a speedy stitch be strong enough?

Any thing you can do with a sewing machine you can do with the Speedy Stitcher, only slower. I sewed on a saddle with the Speedy Stitcher with 100lb test dyneema fishing line. It worked great.

Thank you. I may end up having to use a speed stitcher for my needs!

I sewed some of my holy socks for practice yesterday with my new sewing machine. It worked great and even an uneven sewing job was comfortable under my shoes. I plan to practice a lot of sewing on the machine before trying a DIY saddle. Does anyone here sew with Dyneema fishing line in a machine for better strength? I want to try it.

Haven't tried it. I remember reading about some people trying fishing line and not having great luck with getting the tension right. Something about less consistency in the size and shape of the line. Don't recall which type of fishing line was being discussed.
If you have some on hand, it would be pretty easy to give it a quick try and report back! Good luck!

Only thing about dyneema is if you encounter a snag it can break your machine instead of the thread.... use with caution

I hadn't thought about that. I have 60lb test dyneema fishing line I was going to try. It has a bit of drag through a size 18 needle so it may be too large, 0.40mm. I will try it by hand at first.

I sewed a my first DIY with a speedy stitcher and had probably 15+ hours in that thing with the speedy stitch.
I then got my hands on a lightweight Brother sewing machine and made more of a manufactured like saddle out of an old hunting harness, some camo fabric, and salvaged webbing...sewn with Guttermans upholstery thread from Joaans. I hunted all season long out of that thing and it changed my game. Be sure to read to Sewing Resources here and do your reading on proper stitching/load bearing sets. My DIY saddle changed my game this year!
Good luck to ya!

The Bernina shouldn’t have any trouble with it. I have an older Bernina, and they are beasts!!

Thanks! I have been sewing on it for the last few days and it has taken everything like a champ.
I have all my items ordered to make a saddle and to make some gear. Super excited to get started

Thanks for the advice! I have already read the entire sewing resource thread and have watched all the videos in the thread. I have also made sure to research the correct thread, gutermann #40 92, with a size 18 needle. I got cordura coming with mil spec mesh with webbing that’s also mil spec. I have done lots of research and plan to take my time to have it all perfect and correct. I already fell 25 feet and broke my back, (it was my fault, I unclipped my harness to climb down to get something and lost balance and fell), so I don’t plan on making a bad saddle where I do it again. Lol

Food for thought...Gutermann Tera 40 has a breaking strength around 8.3 lbs/stitch (according to HERE) . It feeds great in both of my machines. And I guarantee I can put in 12-14 GOOD stitches in with my machine in less time than I can do 2 by hand. And it's not that expensive...

Sounds like your on the right path!
Glad your ok!! I couldn't tell you the number of unsafe things I've done using treestands. It's a miracle I have never fallen.
