Smoked…

Apparently “to smoke an animal” is the act of being extremely fired up after launching a projectile in the general direction of the target, which may or may not have made impact, and is said regardless of the result. It’s akin to: “I just shot my hunting tool and I’ve now lost all control of myself.” See Buck Fever

"smoked" means "put a good shot on" (usually)....this differentiates it from simply "shooting", which could be a bad shot also

what other word conveys that meaning as efficiently? if you find one, then others will start to use and then it will begin to get on another person's nerves pretty soon.

The past few months I’ve been recovering from an injury and have watched a lot of hunting videos. I really wish that “smoked” was only used after a good shot.

yeah, if someone makes an obvious bad shot and then turns to the camera and says "smoked'em!"....then that's pretty tool bagish

Roll em if you don’t!
You know my grandmother and my dad and his brother and two sisters would tell the story of my grandfather..... who smoked liked a chimney unfiltered tobacco he rolled himself that he used to chain smoke and was so adept at it he could do it on one knee while he was driving. Imagine nowadays he'd be a pretty cool dude in some circles who look at that as a necessary skill set!!! :fearscream:

Good assumption, but I'm a STEM guy. I do know the NATO phonetic alphabet and prefer military time, also.

Not sure if this is from the military, but I like my dates like 31March2023.
When I'm writing my own notes I do the way I did in the Coast Guard: 31MAR2023 or 31MAR23. I can read a full date-time group (1102S31MAR2023) but that level of nostalgia is generally overkill for personal records. And I do slash my zeros, and put an understrike on my 1s.

I was very excited to read about some culinary adventures, but the performative post-shot celebrations are a pet peeve of mine, as well. I like to think it's something the producers insist on to add a level of drama. My favorite shows - MeatEater and Farming the Wild - generally tend to avoid the over-the-top end-zone dances we see on most other shows.

Another thing I notice is when the shot is taken in full sun with short shadows... but they don't find the animal until well past sundown. Maybe spend less time practicing your end zone dances and more time on marksmanship and tracking, but then again those skills don't translate to on-screen drama.

what does the "S" after the 1102 tell you...just a separation mark?

Another favorite of mine is Creek Kings, not a lot of hoopla and they show some respect for the critters they take.

It’s been years since my old lady gave me the “it’s me or cigarettes” speech and for the better I chose her haha but back in my smoking days nothing was better than hand rolled fresh tobacco or a pack or lucky strikes! An old timer once told me smoking a filtered cigarette is like sucking a tit through a bra and man did that analogy stick with me for quite some time! Sounds like your grandfather would have been that kinda man!

Back before I dropped cigarettes I'd occasionally grab a pack of Lucky Strikes, I guess to be extra punk rock or something. Or Camel Straights. Last time I did so I felt like hammered dog(poop) the next morning, which was enough for me to not repeat the experience, even when encouraged by bourbon. But your old timer was sure on to something!

Thank the gods I quit, but I admit to once upon a time being one of those loose tobacco, hand rolled, one handed while driving, nothing can stop my habit kinda guys. Now I put that kind of dedication into chasing bucks.

Before I quit I dabbled in pipes. I still have a few, and a pouch of loose-leaf tobacco which I'm sure is stale enough to no longer be palatable. One good thing about it is, it takes about 30-45 minutes to smoke a pipe... so if you smoke, and really want to inconvenience someone with a smoke break, there you go. You could even pump your arm and do a dance and shout "Boom! Smoked 'em!" when coming back from your break...
