Smoked him!

I think of it this way. The more hunters look like savages to others the worse it for all of us. TV celebrities can say and do these things because they do not have to worry about finding deer or hunting ground. They either have plenty of their own or get free invites to other private places. The majority of us hunt public ground or small pieces of private and struggle with gaining access otherwise. Do you want a landowner remembering the time they flicked through the channels and saw a hunter acting like a fool. I sure as hell don’t. Also remember public land is governed by the state and that means politicians are involved and they ultimately control what happens to our future.

While we're at it can someone tell the idiots that a yearling is a deer between one and two years old, NOT A FAWN. Possibly my #1 hunting pet peeve.
On the other end of this, I hate seeing “doe down” and there is a picture of a hunter holding the head up and is bow is longer than the deer. Just man up and say “FAWN DOWN!”

Why don't we all just stop caring about what other people do? Doe, fawn, smoked, shot, harvested, who cares. Follow the law and shoot what you want, and talk about it like you want. it's got nothing to do with manhood.

Besides, non-men like @katiesmom put me to shame regardless!

Yeah, I don't care much what others do or say, so long as they're obeying the law. If you don't like it, don't watch it.

On a personal level, the only thing I remember saying or thinking when I've released an arrow is "go down, go down..." Or if I have to take up a track job, praying that I made a clean kill.

One thing I've learned over the last few years, we need more love in this country and less hate.

I would think it a good thing to build a positive hunting culture. It's not an issue of manhood.

Thats exactly why I can't watch hunting shows any longer. I cannot stand seeing someone hit a deer 12" too far back quartering on and be so proud they just gut shot a magnificent animal. And then yell I smoked him on TV to make it all better. I'd rather watch You Tube vids of average Joe trying to get it done W/not so great of video but at least a little respect.

Legal limits are just that, limits. And subject to change, including restriction. Conscientiousness and responsibility help keep things between the uprights.

For those who aren't releasing films of hunts, it's like the adage goes...if a tree falls in the woods does it make a sound.

But for those who are in the public eye, know that...the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I can tolerate the stupid video commentaries after a shot way more than the typical intros and fluff footage. I am a YouTube pro viewer and ffwd to at least the 7 min mark to start watching a 10 min video and miss nothing of substance. Also, don't show me a video sitting in the stand with no action or kills unless you are at least actually sharing tactical information.
Yes Sir, Nothing greater than 5 or 6 minutes of whispering about strategies.....

Yes, the 80,10,10 rule but I argue now its more like 90,5,5, where 90% of people do not hunt but do not have an opinion either way, 5% are anti's and 5% are us. We need to worry about the 90% not the 5% that hate what we do!!!

Or... "Another one that fits perfectly on the grille.... DOWN!!"

Mostly, it's the social media aspect that I believe everyone is referring to. Maybe It takes away the humanity of it, the closeness of the take maybe not. Does it annoy me when I hear someone say smoked him, or didn't go 20, or I run an xyz, or saddle hunter on a budget, looking for a saddle for cheap......sure does, but they are just words.
Social media is just the new way of story telling. It's no different then 2 cave men smelling each other breath and painting a cave.
I know people who get annoyed that I hunt a couple different states and kill 5-7 deer a year. But I don't do it for them, I don't care how anyone else feels about what I do, sans my wife.... on occasion. People are going to tell their stories, you don't have to listen or look at them

Why is it hard to balance the excitement of good fortune with reverence for taking life?

Why is it a challenge to consider accountability when in position to be setting an example?

Ego.

It would be interesting to catalog what "celebrity" hunters most often say after the shot.

I'll start...

Benoits = "He's down."

Beast = "Got me another one" (I actually find it incredibly annoying).
Let’s not forget Rogers famous “Jimeny Christmas!” I just love roger and I think I’ve heard him say he’s smoked em too. I personally don’t care what folks say. Actions speak louder and character is more important.

Yeah, buckmercials. I think "rage in the cage" is one of the worst.

Why let the broadheads get all the glory. Hows about them shouting out out saddle or stand companies after a connect. I can hear it now..."Absolutely Tethrd him!"....."What a Beast from the Beast, Got Me Another One TM"..........................."Shut him down faster than a Lone Wolf lawsuit!"
This^^^ man that’s genius! I’m gonna Hawk the next one fo sho!

I couldn’t care less what someone else says when they shoot an animal. However, I think we can all agree that Luke Bryan is the worst for so may reasons… Including his reaction here
Couldn't agree more... not only is his music terrible, but after watching this I was like "whelp, can't stand this dude..."

Who’s getting tired of hearing this phrase? Man I sure am!!! Not only do I feel it’s disrespectful to the animal but it’s a horrible term. Maybe I’m old fashion but when I take an animals life there is some celebration and a time to pause and thank God. I feel more hunters are loosing respect for the hunt and animal. I think this is hurting the hunting community and people are now seeing it when posting content on social media. What are your feelings?

I can’t stand the performative nature of it all. Especially when the first thing a self filmer does when is turn the camera to themselves to react.

Hoot and holler all you want or not at all, it's your moment so have at it as long as it's not put on social media for all the world see.

I don't think it looks good for the hunting community as a whole when some dips**t posts a video that clearly shows he made a bad shot, says smoked him as the deer ran off hard and out of sight and then doubles down on ignorance by showing the video footage hours later of a search party trying to locate said smoked deer in the darkness.

It's not considered smoked if you can't recover it within minutes of the shot or it hasn't spent enough time in the smoker.

I can't believe nobody has said it yet....the worst of them all, "Harvest". I don't know about you all but I don't harvest deer. I kill deer. Plain and simple.

Not trying to be disagreeable, but I sometimes use that word as it seems most appropriate in some situations. I'm pretty sure I've killed deer that I haven't recovered, and thus haven't harvested. Harvest is a one-word description that clearly communicates that bambi came home with me.

I looked up harvest definitions online. Most of it focuses on crops of course. Here's one of Merriam Webster's verb definitions:

: to gather, catch, hunt, or kill (salmon, oysters, deer, etc.) for human use, sport, or population control

Sounds about right. Again, not trying to be disagreeable. I get the spirit of folks who feel like the word is an attempt to obfuscate about what is truly taking place. That is never my intent, but I can see how it might be others'.
