Was hanging from it jumping up and down. Didn't budge a bit lol. Not sure how else to test it short of hooking it to my truck. Hmmm..... Haha

I did a sewn eye on my climbing rope. First test myself 220lbs and a coworker 120lbs hanging and bouncing on it. Then I setup a climb in the park with a 60' throw in where the first part of the tree I could touch was over 40'. At about 30' I started looking up at my sewing job and then back down at the ground, back at my sewing, and back down at the ground. At this point I decided not testing was needed.

Back to work.

I kidnapped one of my second shift employees who if a bit on the hefty size to repeat the experiment. So we went out to the parking lot and I set the rope in one of the trees a island. After the hook up and the obligatory bouncing I casually ask how much he weighed just to make sure I had a good test. When he told me it was all I could do to keep my jaw attached to my face. The answer 430lbs! 650 lbs total I now trust my sewn eye.

 I'd say your sewing job was just fine then! After doing these splices I feel confident enough to use them. I may Put one through a torture test but I doubt I can break it with anything I have!

Flingin, those look great. Way nicer than a double figure 8 and not nearly as bulky.

Thanks! Yes it is much nicer! Rope packs down so much smaller and looks a lot better too

Looks awesome. Splicing is definitely the way to make loops.

When you get your hands on some amsteel, you'll be amazed how easy it is to work with.

I'm sure Amsteel is 100x easier than the double braided Bandit. I read that the 24 strand covers in ropes like that are really hard to splice and I would agree. But, I tackled that one first and pulled it off so I should be able to handle anything else I need to do. I have an HSS rope tether I am doing now and it's much much easier than the Bandit lol.

Been a splicing fool this weekend lol. Got two bridges done and a tether and a 9mm eye to eye for a friction hitch. I got it figured out now!

Looks really good. You decided not to splice your bridge right to your saddle?

I'm attempting my first splice on some bandit. I tried making my own fids out of knitting needles. I can't for the life of my push the Fid to get the core back into the cover.I get hung up at the y of where the splice will be. I ended up just buying a Samson did and still can't do it. Any suggestions.

That part is the hardest. I made a fid from an old Easton axis arrow and it seems to be the perfect size. You have to taper the core down before trying to get it past the Y. Also don't use tape on it that made it almost impossible for me. Oh and almost forgot, I feed the fid in from the other side below the Y Of the splice, once out the other side I put the core into the fid and push it back through with a skinny screw driver or whatever you got. Hope that makes sense!

Well after much effort I did it. I found it way easier using a wire Fid I just made. :)

Just did the other end,no problem. Tough burying the crossover but a video I saw showed inserting a rod through the eye and milking and giving good sharp jerks.

Awesome man! Looks good! I have been wrapping the crossover in dental floss to compress it an that helps a lot. Like you said keeping the pressure on the eye with a rod or screwdriver while milking the cover back helps a lot too. The last two I did I hooked the rope to the floor joist in the basement and hooked into my harness so I could put all my weight into the rope while milking the cover back. Much easier that way. After you do a few it's pretty easy!

I really enjoy this forum. One in a while I get to help. It amazes me that sometimes the things that I take for granted and are second nature aren't that way to others. Then I get stumped by something or may be unfamiliar with something and one of you guys knows all about it. I have really grown to appreciate this community.
This rope splicing thing is new on me, but I can certainly see it's value. I'm glad you guys are here for me To pester with any questions I might have

No kidding. Just found you guys in 2014. Didn't join till 2015, by that time I believed that a lot of you were similar to me in a lot of ways. Even if I am a bit of a southern hick . Not much for refinement or culture these days, I prefer to keep things simple. Share knowledge freely . Love your neighbor (if she's cute and single and willing). Work hard. Hunt hard. Have fun. Do unto others. ..and all that
