St Vincent Island

I got lucky and found a buck Thursday. Ended up fishing/tending camp for the rest of the weekend while my two buddies hunted.

I'd rather have that flounder than the deer! Fishing is the only thing I miss about FL (well maybe the bikinis).

Great pics! Makes me smile... some years back did the WT hunts twice and Sambar once, all with tradbows. Killed deer and pigs, and saw a sambar up close during the WT hunt. Surely would like to go back one day, kept thinking the hurricanes ran over the island a few times since then and maybe caused havoc with game loss etc?

There definitely isn’t an over abundance of game. Between the three of us we’ve seen more Sambar than whitetail in two years of whitetail hunts and there’s only supposed to be 100 or less Sambar on the whole island. Also according to the USFWS employees running the hunt the hogs have been totally eradicated on the island. Still a fun hunt though and I can’t wait to go back.

1st yr we camped on mainland and kayaked over daily. Crossing solo at dark in fog was interesting.
Next yr we hired ferry and camped on north side. I had my bike which cut walking downtime.
Sambar hunt we hired delivery to south end. Bike again and I almost died riding the beach back after 1st scouting day. Ran out of water, got pretty dangerous. Whew. That was a wake up lol.
We were the only nuts on that gun hunt with tradbows, we got picked on a lot haha.
Got pictures somewhere around the house here.

Ok....what advice can u guys who've been on the island to hunt can u give the first timer as far as gear list.

U gotta supply ur own fire wood or can u take from the island? U need an axe/saw or do they cut deadfall and provide for u?

Kinda looking for insight on things u had no idea to bring with u until u went and actually did it

What were the temps like in Oct at night? U used lightweight stuff and wished u brought heavyweight or visa versa?

I'm a guest on the boat so I want to make my foot print as small and unintrusive as possible. The dang bike is the worst...no getting around that 1. Excluding the bike, water jug, and bow case I pretty sure I can get everything packed down inside 1 large dry bag, Alice pack, and a boat bag.

What did u guys do about ice and coolers? Load them down with ice and tout them over...go get ice from the mainland if u killed 1? I don't need ice for my food or drink or anything like that but I dang sure plan on killing 1..

They do not allow sawing or tree limb removal. We brought our own wood but used a propane grill to cook so we used very little fire wood at all. The only water is on the main land so drinking water and a solar shower are musts. There are portapotties on the island by the guard shack. It’s very primitive camping otherwise.

The weather depends. It’s late October in Florida. The first couple days I was there it was mid 80’s day time and around 72 at night, but it rained a bit. Then Friday evening a front came through and it dropped to low 50’s at night and highs of about 70 Saturday and around 66 on Sunday

Hell yeah, good luck, hope you get one. Seems like the most sign from them I saw was east side of the island, I saw one on my whitetail hunt.

I got the draw this year but won’t be able to make it due to my rut hunt.
