Stepping away for a bit

I’ve got to say I was blown away when I first discovered this saddle hunting thing. I saw THP doing it and said I’ve got to know more about saddle hunting. That’s what led me to this site and what’s been the nicest, most polite, most innovative forum I’ve ever been on. You guys have always welcomed everyone no matter what the skill set or method of hunting. Very rarely have I ever heard anything rude or negative. That’s something that’s definitely a rarity on forums these days and I compliment you.
That said, I’ve kinda decided to stop chasing the saddle thing. I found out early on that it’s one of the most expensive ways to hunt. I said I would save and buy a saddle but you know, life happens. I’ll still use the sit drag and rch combo as long as I can tolerate it and be content with it. I’ll continue to use my climber and a 5 gallon bucket too. I’ve just got to stop obsessing over saddles and the kidney I’ll have to sell to make it happen.
Having to be the primary provider in my family and picking up a second job has made me re-prioritize when and where I spend money. And you know what, I’m OK with it. I’ve just had to come to the place where I have to admit that the saddle is unobtainium, as is the new bow, and all of the other gear.
You guys are great and I look forward to the interaction on the forum every day. Be safe, have fun, and shoot every arrow you’ve got and break every bone in their body!

Wait, I'm a little confused. Are you stepping away from the forum, saddle hunting, or gear buying?

Tons of guys here publicly admit they are no longer actual 'saddle' hunters and we still welcome them to hang around as long as they wear a big crossed out S on their hunting clothes!

I hope you'll stick around at least to view the multiple shames threads!

We welcome all no matter what inferior styles of hunting they uses.

I've been in the same saddle for 4 years now and 100% happy with it. Don't think I'll ever move on from the LWCG .5, great platform.

For years I've been chasing unicorns with two pieces of gear:
- Climbing methods that: work for an acrophobe, pack as compact/light as possible, and minimal fiddle factor for run and gun. I've tried them all and continue to try just about everything that comes up.
- Perfecting a clothing system that works in all weather conditions and packs light/compact for long hikes

Lol, that’s why you guys are the best! I’m stepping back from the idea of me hunting from a legit saddle. I’m putting all of the gear buying on the back burners. I’m going to keep shooting my 18 year old bow out of my 25 year old climber. And I’ll proudly wear the crossed out S.

Yeah man I wouldn’t just up and leave just because you’re not in the market for a “real” saddle. To be honest I hang around here partly because I’m still interested in saddle hunting, but mostly because most everyone in here and the atmosphere in general is just awesome.

I stand hunt just as much if not a little more than saddle hunt, also interested in some ground hunting, blind hunting sometimes, etc. And this is the place that I largely learn about new gear to check out and possibly buy if I want to, or just window shop.

Plenty of people talk about stands, blinds, ground hunting, etc. and I’m one of them. I say stick around man, even if you never buy anything for hunting again. Don’t have to pay to play here, at least that’s been my experience.

I had to save up for my saddle gear. It took a long time and my wife told me I was stupid when I dropped the money on saddle hunting. Also there isn't anything wrong with using an older bow. I'm shooting an old Archery Research 31 ( 15 years old ), I think I paid $100 bucks for it complete with sight, quiver and rest. As far as saddle gear there are some decent deals that pop up on here from time to time in the classifieds. Hang around.

Stay for the atmosphere! This site is great.
It is pretty easy to get caught up in the latest and greatest on here. Good you can recognize what your limits are and what is enjoyable. Love to hear guys killing deer with a bucket, 15yr old bow, and carhartts.
Best of luck this season!

Its gotta be a Summit Viper. I still have two of them and they are super comfortable. Like a lazyboy in the sky. Haven't used it for several years now though.

Don't leave, I'm newer to the forum but it has become my 1st choice for any questions about gear or most of hunting. There is so many threads that aren't saddle related and great knowledge for any archery hunter.

It’s the Buckshot Bigshot. I took it over from my dad when he stopped stand hunting. It’s a beast to haul in but like a recliner when it’s set up.
My first time hunting public was with a API Grand Slam my FIL gave me. There are still times that I considered purchasing the game cart attachment for it and take it for a spin one day. Comfort wise it was pretty nice.

Some of those old climbers were the best. I used to have an old tree lounger stand. It was big and bulky but the most comfortable stand in the woods. I spent many of days napping in that thing. Wish I still had it.

My bow is a 20yr old Parker, my stepdad (passed away now) bought me when I was 15. He taught me to bow hunt, set up just like how he set it up, running only 55#. I always think of upgrading but then I think of all the memories I had with him and can’t. I’ve only killed a couple deer with it, I’m not a good Hunter but it’s the memories of his passion of hunting that keeps sending me out there. I enjoy the quiet. Until I bought my saddle I’ve never spent much money on the hunt. I read all the posts on here and rarely post anything because I don’t have much useful information to give and everyone on here is respectful and it’s my only form of social media I care for.

I can’t sell my summit, and still think about using it. Truth be told there’s not much better feeling than to be all set up in a climber, half asleep, watching the woods wake up.

@Ckwilli two years ago I took my fancy new jx3 to deer camp, southern Ohio. Most of us got skunked, myself included, but the guy that was using his climber in the same spot, leaving it on the tree, day after day, bagged a nice 140”. Saddles aren’t necessary!
