TAC Events- Recommend or Not???

I have a piece of PVC pipe I put in the bottle pocket of my Popup, so the same concept. Works well, I hate walking very far with my hip quiver on.
Back when I lurked Tradgang I got really intrigued by side quivers, like Safari Tuff and High Noon Hunter. Would a side quiver be well-suited to this application?

Years ago when I would go shoot fun rounds with buddies, I used a quiver very similar to the safari tuff and it worked very well for me.

I had to look up what those quivers were since the closest I’ve gotten to trad archery was making a bow from a stick and a piece of string when I was 4 or 5, but I’d say those would be decent options.

Awesome! Great time the course was challenging but fun and the people were great!
I shot the Prime course which was described as 40-100 Yds targets, steep and difficult. We shot on Friday and a great time. It took us about 4 hrs to shoot that course as well. I was very impressed with how organized and smooth the whole event flowed. The pictures do not accurately portray how steep the first half of the course was. You can kind of get the feeling of how steep things were from the first picture, the Prime and Sitka courses started on top of the peak in the upper left corner and ends near the parking lot that you can see in the middle of the second picture. According to a podcast TAC put out the Vermont course has the 3rd greatest elevation drop. To get to the peak we had to take a second chair lift.

A buddy shot at peccary through the willy wags and hit under it, in the dirt. When we got to the target you could not see an arrow. We dug around in the leaf litter and dirt and found 4 other burried arrows before we finally found his.

Trees and branches protecting an uphill 50 yard shot at a bear. If you look close you can see some arrows in the trees. One arrow goes through a dead branch and into the tree behind it where there is another arrow as well.

We will definitely be going next year and will probably shoot a couple courses. I really felt the shoot was good practice and wish I could shoot a course like more often. I only lost one arrow and missed foam 2 times so I was happy with my day. One of the targets I missed was a full size bison, 150 yards down hill (so much for 40-100 ;) ). The farthest I could shoot on a pin was 95. I watched a guy put his 100 about 10' over the bison and came up short, so I went about 15' over his hump and came up 3' short. When I shot I could not see the bison, I followed the front leg straight up and over the hump. Surprisingly my left/right was dead on.

On the walk back after the last target all I could think about was how September 15th could not get hear soon enough!

The vendor area at the bottom had pretty good representation of different archery/hunting brands. The practice area had plenty of room for those that wanted to shoot and was also where you could try making the shots to win the truck or other prizes. I made the mistake of trying on a pair of Crispi's after shooting the course.......the guy warned me before I put them on. My wife had just asked what I wanted for Father's day so I bought a pair.

Maybe next year we will travel to PA as well.

The RMEF course was probably easier than the leupold course. A full sized elk at 90 yards is still a big target. I missed one of 15 shots and brought all my arrows home.
It was a good way to dip my toes into shooting far but at just under 2 hours and 15 targets it left me wanting more. Probably best for your second course of the day and not the main event.

edit to add: I moved up to 90 on 3 shots that were 100,100 and 112. I didn’t think my arrow would clear my sight housing at 100. Could have avoided this if I set up my sight differently. Maybe I would have lost an arrow shooting the actual course distance.

Once you start slinging arrows at targets a long ways away, shooting at 20 yards just isn’t that much fun anymore.

My hunting arrows are RIP TKOs that come in at ~470 grains. I built some 3DHV screamers that come in at ~363 grains. I have a Tetra RYZ and with my top pin I can get out to 125 yards and 140 yards with the bottom pin. I used Bohning Air vanes to get as much clearance as possible.

So how long does it take to shoot a course on average?

I did the Leupold course in TN on a Sunday at 9:30. Took about 4 hours, a guy was walking off and said it took him 2 when I showed up. Lots of waiting around. Don’t know how people make weekends out of standing around like that but the shots where fun. Some guys I shot with said it took them 6+ hours to do a course Saturday with all the waiting.

I shot Leupold yesterday shooting RMEF today. Leopold much like a regular 3d course just longer distances. I did fine in the longer shots actually 12 ringed the wolverine at 47.5 yards but they had some sneaky branches on a couple of targets so I lost three arrows.

I think the leupold course is technically tougher than the rmef. I missed a few on last years leupold course but only missed one elk.

I was just aiming center mass so maybe if I was really aiming for the 11 I’d have made bigger mistakes. I dunno. Either way, watching my arrow sail 90 yards was pretty cool.

What time is your nock time tomorrow?

Finally met up with @Bigterp today at TAC. I had already finished RMEF had a 7:30am nock time so we could get back home in a reasonable time today so we weren’t able to shoot the course together but it was awesome meeting.
I really enjoyed TAC but I agree these (Leupold and RMEF) were kind of teasers compared to Nock On, Prime and Sitka from what I understand from others. I will certainly try to train more intensely now that I know what to expect. My wife went with me as a walk thru so she didn’t shoot but even she enjoyed the exercise and the time together. We were talking to several other archers as dinner and what not and several who shot the Sitka course said they walked 6.5 miles. I was shooting a Matthews Chill R set at 60lbs., pushing some old GT .400 spine Hunter XT shafts (.246 ID) tipped with 100gr field points and Zinger fletches. My sight elevation would only go to 95 so I did the old Kentucky windage on the 100yard elk. My wife said , “go big or go home” when I was a bit pensive about shooting from the markers but I’m glad I did it. I hit most of them albeit were simply fives nothing in the ten or twelve ringer in the 100+ yard elk. But I did get some tens in the closer ones.

One thing to remember on these steep angles, up or down is to draw level and THEN bend at the waist. Either up or down. I caught myself (with some of the uphill shooting) sighting and then drawing and that’s bad for shot consistency.

How much attention did the zingers get? I swear everyone I ran into had to ask what they were and why I chose to use them

Yes I had questions about them too. Some guys saying they look too small etc. I said believe it or not they control Broadheads well too.

I’m still up and down with zingers. I run aae stealth max and Bohning air vanes typically for 3D but a big shoot like that with the difficulty levels and sneaky shots I’d much rather put a little money back in my pocket from the arrow that hits the tree haha

The TAC gave all participants a sample of AAE fletches to try.

Thats what’s good about the zingers! If your arrow is stuck you can still take the zingers and nocks with you! :fearscream:

I shot thr Leupold course with 2 buddies at 1130 then shot RMEF on the way down. We finished shooting after 6pm. It was a super cool experience! I just shot my hunting setup 560 gr Easton axis 5mm match grade with blazers,Mathews traverse at 70#. It was lobbing on some of those long elk shots but a great time. Favorite shot of the day was target #14 uphill elk at 52 yds. The bottom 2/3 of his vitals were obscured by that log. Check out all the drag marks on the log above those stuck donations. I shot 40 targets lost an arrow & broke one……. Not bad considering some of those shots. Was nice meeting @woodsdog2 & @goody94 !!! I’ll plan better next time & shoot the RMEF early & head up the mountain for a more technical shoot later in the day to avoid the crowds. Plus I’d shoot Thursday & Friday, can’t imagine what today & tomorrow are……. @bloodsoakedberber let me knowIMG_2896.jpeg

Dude that’s crazy on the log. There wasn’t a single arrow in it thursday. I had that ranged at 46.5. I dialed to 48 and held just on top of the log and slipped it into the 5. I missed shot number 6 or 7, the 45 yard uphill into the woods. My bubble would not stop ripping right even though I felt straight. Strange footing at that marker. Was too busy fighting my bow and botched that one.
I actually woke up sick this morning and didn’t get to go back for day 2.

Man get feeling better! Maybe that’s why we’re all 6” high & not in the log……. lol
