Talk me out of bolts

I cannot figure out what makes this concept so hard for some to understand. It's a hole in a tree where you put a bolt. You use the bolt the same as any other step.
The "concept" of bolt installation is not hard to understand. What I am discussing is safe/proper and maybe even the most efficient use of a lineman's rope while climbing on bolts.

I may climb down with the linesman attached, but hardly ever up until I set my platform....presets obviously. Three points of contact on the climbing surface. #ucking with an unnecessary rope can get you hurt.

So you are going up with no linemans, tether, or lifeline of any form?

Nope. Like climbing any other ladder. As soon as I get to height I clip in. If I'm drilling or setting sticks, you have to use a linesman to be efficient. After its done though, not until I get to the top.

I've tried, and for the trouble, I feel safer not fiddling with the rope until I'm ready to get set.

To be clear, I saddle hunt because I don't like heights. I'm not going above 18'.

I have a bit of a problem descending using the LB. It seems to hang up as I’m stepping down
What’s the trick?

All I can tell you is what I try to do not sure if it's right or not LOL Before I take a step down lean towards the tree and move my LB to where it is waist high this will typically allow me enough length to take a step down. Then just repeat. Honestly, I am thinking about running a 30' tether and rappeling on a munter instead of "climbing" down. In my opinion, being on a tether that reaches the ground is a good thing for self rescue should anything happen.

Just enough slack that it slides down the tree and rests on the bolt you just let go of. I let it fall to the bolt, pull the bolt and let it drop as I go.

If I have it connected.

This sounds like a good idea, but what is a munter. Assuming it’s some type of descending device

You have one hand free. Use it to move your LB if it doesn't move down on it's own. Maintain 3 points of contact. (1 hand, 2 feet), (2 hands, 1 foot), (2 feet, LB)
You should maybe practice a few times going up and down maybe 4 bolts on a practice tree to get the hang of it. You're missing something, as it shouldn't be this difficult; especially not to the point of considering rappelling down when using bolts.

Here is a quick video demo I made for someone that I made a bolt aider for. Sorry for the quality, I was holding my phone in one hand to record.

Question for you guys using this climbing method. I cannot use bolts on public. Trying to use this method with tree hopper steps. Using a linesman rope is no problem. Do you also climb with your tether attached?

This method only works well with lineman’s belt, with or without a tether. I wouldn’t make the decision to use your tether as well based on what unqualified folks here do.

But, the lineman’s belt is a necessity to do this smoothly and quietly.

No it’s not, I bent one last season and I’m 210 nude, it didn’t break just got bent a little, I’m pretty rough on my stuff though and really crank up a tree usually, I climb for a living and probably feel a little too safe most of the time, I still use titanium bolts but most would be better served just sticking with grade 8 in my opinion.
Why are you climbing nude? Sounds dangerous

Bolts are great for taking side pressure. That’s why the aider works so well with this method. I don’t think Treehopper steps would work great, but they do have those side wings that would help a little with the side pressure.

LB only for me when I climb this way. Lately, I have mainly climbed with LWHC because I do feel safer with a tethered climbing method.
