Team 10 Thread

Like majority of my quota hunts I get into deer on the end of day 3....sheesh

Climbed and sat this morning and a group of small hogs ran through before shooting time. Didn't see anything and got down and went looking for the pigs. I'd move and they'd move over and over until I finally kinda catch up at a small flag pond..I drew the bow twice but never got a shot... Made it back to the truck and ate some lunch. Changed locations and started poking around. I found a little piece of high ground that juts out into a freshwater marsh. I heard 2 buck grunts out in the marsh but never seen him. That's only the second time I've ever heard a real live buck grunt.... Half hour before sundown a single doe came out and fed around on the point under my tree and then 4 more showed up single file 15yds broadside. Shooting light passed and I could hear them walking around. I decided to give myself a little challenge and see if I could get down and packed up without alerting them... Waited till I couldn't hear them and down and pack and go without a blow or the sounds of a deer running off

That's it for deer season on that wma but I'll be back out for small game... The military base archery blocks open tomorrow so I have a place to deer hunt until end of January
Sante Fe Swamp is pretty close to camp blanding. It’s bow and muzzleloader only and no quota to hunt. Keep that in mind if the base doesn’t produce.

I went out today to the military base. I picked 1 of the smaller blocks of woods and walked the whole dang thing....there was deer sign but nothing that I felt I needed to sit on. I scared a bear outta the swamp and it high pressure ran/shat with poo flying outta the rear end of that thing everywhere. Further up in there I seen something swimming in a small pond...either an otter or alligator but I couldn't saw 100% what it was. I bumped into another hunter and we chatted it up for a little...1 of the few people I've met that was actually a nice person. He was an older guy and humping a climber around and I felt bad for him...I showed him my saddle stuff and he said he's gonna check it all out. So after walking all day I had a couple spots in mind for the evening but I wasn't very confident and mainly climbed up a tree cause I didn't want to go home yet....as I got up the tree I could see a swampy area that I wasn't able to see from the ground....I got set up and really wanted to be about 30-40 yds closer to that wet area but my platform was already set so I said screw it....I didn't think I was gonna see anything anyway....but around 5oclock I saw a legal buck in that area I was thinking of moving closer to....dang..... Then my gut said to get down and go ahead and relocate but for whatever reason I didn't and then a little before last light 2 does came out right where the buck did...dang....skunked again. My legs are trashed .....walking in sugar sand is horrible.

Well, after hunting 12 sits over the last week, still useless as a team member:angry:

Ended up seeing multiple bucks and even got a shot at one with bow. Had a smaller buck skirt me at 60-70 yards. Called it in to around 40 but he lost interest. After walking off I waited a few minutes and rattled trying to bring him back. He was apparently gone but as soon as I put antlers up a nice 8-point came walking directly towards me from where smaller one left. His nose was down steadily walking and got to 25 yards. Was already pulled back so stopped him and took shot. Ended up hitting the smallest little branch and arrow went about an inch over his back. Talk about sickening!!!

Oh well, that’s hunting right? Great experience since I’ve never killed one with bow. It’ll happen sooner or later.

On a positive side, my son seems to be a future bow hunter. He was able to shoot an old bow my father-in-law had. Was set at 53 lbs and took him a while to get comfortable pulling back but once he figured it out he was hooked. He’ll be getting a new bow for Christmas from his mom so I’m excited about that.

Overall, a great week of being in the woods with my son and family. We’ll be back at em later in December to hopefully add some points to our team.

Well guys I just shot a doe. Set up on a patch of red oaks on the edge of a thicket, tethered in at ground level. First she came to about 15 yards but never came out of the thicket and started circling back the way she came. I let her get 25-30 yards away and started scraping the ground with my foot. She turned, stared for a minute, and started working her way back towards me. She would get right to the edge of the thicket and stand there looking for a deer, then eventually turn around and head back into the thicket. Every time she did this I would scrape the ground and she would come right back. Finally after a good 30-40 minutes of this she stopped in a spot where her vitals were exposed and I squeezed an arrow in there. Don't know if my arrow deflected or if she took a step, but I hit her back. Sounded like shooting a wet towel. She ran into the thicket, stopped for a second, then slowly walked away. I'm gonna back out and come back in the morning and put my 6 month old lab on her first track job.

On second thought, I think I'll call a buddy with an experienced tracking dog. My pup does great in the back yard with liver drags, and tracking ground disturbance, but I should probably put her on a couple easy tracks to build her confidence.

I've wounded 2 deer this season already but believe both were non-fatal hits. This one I think is fatal based on the sound and her reaction. I didn't even look for my arrow or blood, just waited an hour, slowly packed up my stuff and snuck out of there the opposite way she went. My chances of recovery with a dog should be pretty good.

I hope you find her in short order
