Team 11 Thread

Had a nice sit tonight in between two bean fields in a narrow but long patch of woods with a lot mature oaks dropping. Saw 3 does all within shooting range but not quite cold enough here to shoot does yet.

For the guys that choose to not shoot a doe early season, can you explain why? Not questioning your motivation, just looking to learn everything I can from others.

I am by no means a trophy hunter so meat in the freezer is my first priority. I’ve been of the mindset the past 10 years to try to shoot a doe early in the season so a buck doesn’t end up wasting its time and energy on it during the rut. I also feel that doe numbers need to be managed to ensure a healthy herd.

Oddly enough, I do pass up button bucks so my meat in freezer comment is not totally consistent.

I also understand not shooting a doe during the rut if a buck is what you are holding out for.

One of the bigger factors for me is location I am hunting. If I am in a good spot for bucks then I won't take a doe in that area in the early season. If I'm hunting near a field edge and I know no mature bucks will be coming by then I'll take a doe. We also tend to do some drives later in the season, so that is when we take most of our does.

The farm I hunt has been pretty aggressive at getting buck to doe ratios close to 1:1 as they have gotten out of hand in the past decade. In the past 3 years there have been 57 does taken and 11 bucks. This year I have noticed on camera that the numbers seem to be getting close to that 1:1.

Also, like you mentioned if it is near the rut and I haven't taken a buck yet, then I won't shoot a doe during this time because I'm holding out for the buck. Once mid Nov. rolls around I'll take the first good sized doe I see.

For me it has more to do with being able to hang them up and process them with my work schedule.. I’d rather kill one when it’s colder out or after gun season. They also do drives during gun week and a lot get whacked there.

For me it’s a matter of my arrow went under the first doe and over the second doe. The two arrows were launched about 20 minutes apart from each other,

At least they were clean misses and only my pride was injured.

I chose not to shoot early simply because I know that I can shoot them during rifle or after xmas with my flintlock. I dont feel the need to take a doe because I have about 10lbs of meat left still. This year, in particular, if really enjoyed just being in the woods and seeing deer, I also have failed to locate buck to get after, so I'm probing and scouting right, shooting does isnt real conducive to being low impact!

I was out of venison so I shot that doe, plus she stood under my tree for about 5 minutes. Now I’m going to hold out for a buck but if a big doe gives me a chip shot we will see what happens.

Uneventful weekend here. Day out the VA opener. Did a couple backyard sits but the massive acorn crop has the buck pattern altered. Only a small 6 and 3 point coming in regularly last few days. Going to set up my Oct and Nov schedule this week to get out there. btw I will shoot a doe if a good one comes out. I have a big doe in VA that was a PIA last year and she had good fortune on her side several times. Had her dead a couple of times if it were not for bucks only days (of course). This year no bucks only season!

33 degrees this morning when I left for work and the deer are on their feet. Cell cam is blowing up. I asked my son to hang a camera for me last night because we were busy running around after work. His placement was a little off but he’s getting pics.

Don’t beat yourself up! Last year I shot over the back of a spike at 8:00am at about 20 yards for a clean miss and then killed a 6 not 15 minutes later at 10 yards. I like to think that things happen for a reason. I was sure glad at that point that I missed the spike. In reality, I just neglected to adjust the yardage on my single pin slider.

So I finally got my kudu point 100grain contours. Geez o Pete, they shoot well. To say they fly like a field point would be spot on albeit cliche..... over the past few years I've been attempting to find the most durable/reusable, reliable setup I could build in order to maintain a budget. I feel I'm darn close to that now. These broadheads, should they perform as well as expected, should be the final piece to my setup! I've been shooting a plethora of broadheads over the past 6 years that took me from rage chisel tips to g5 montec then zwickey eskimos/magnus stingers to nap hellrazor and now these kudu's. Went and got a doe tag to see what they can do when it counts! Pretty stoked about these, in case it didnt show......

*edit* Any of yall ever shoot these?

Yes sir, I’m running kudu 125s and cutthroat 125s and love them both. I shot that doe with a kudu and she didn’t even know what happened and was bedded 50y from where I shot her. Unfortunately the shot wasn’t great but that broadhead was still sharp after going through that doe and burying about 12” into the ground. And yeah..they shoot great

Glad to hear it, I'm impressed with how quiet they are. I was running the hellrazor and never really noticed the noise until I shot these, now those hellrazors sound like a plane taking off to me..... I suppose it's due to them being vented but still. I'm typically not a super cheerleader for a particular brand or even a style of item but these are broadheads are just something I have not seen before, in the fact of how the fly and so on.......

Ok enough of that! How's everyones week turning out? Anyone got plans for the coming weekend? It looks like the hurricane rains are finally hitting us over night friday and sticking around until atleast Tuesday, I dont expect a whole lot of pressure this weekend, so I'll be going out sunday or monday. I'm gonna make a sit tomorrow night after work as well, the AP is on the rise here through friday morning so movement should be up a little. Good luck to any one headed out!

How are the kudu’s to sharpen? I went with cutthroat for the straight edge because I lack confidence in my sharpening skills.

I have to head out of town for my son’s football game on Saturday so Sunday will be my only chance to get out this weekend.

Well looks like we’re getting hammered again from this hurricane so I may try and sneak out after it calms but depends on work. Also depends on the damage, last one left ya without power for 11 days so I had to keep the house up and running with the generator.

It’s not as bad as you’d think, I got a diamond rod sharpener and I hit them with that then a ceramic rod and a little strop action and there good to go. They come shaving sharp out of the box too

I went with grizzly stick Ashby’s because of the lack of confidence I have in my sharpening skills. But I have been looking at these Lansky sharpening systems. Anyone every used them?

Those heads look awesome! Never tried the lansky but looks good. Honestly my worksharp guided field sharpener sharpens just about anything I need minus the kudus but I do use it for the ceramic rod and strop with kudus. Plus its like $20 and fits in your pack. Might be a cheap alternative, that or just a varying and paper pack from rough to polishing grits works great for straight edges.
