Team 12 Thread

Crazy windy today so stayed on the ground. Saw a couple bucks in the headlights driving in, and bumped a bedded doe about 8:30. I sat her bed for an hour but she was a no show.

Gun season definitely reshuffled the deck on these properties.

anyone here hunt hill country type stuff? Rut is getting going here and I still haven't locked down pinch points and funnels... gonna hit it hard this week looking for tips from some of you seasoned guys. Big wooded forest land that is also hilly I should say. Surrounding private property is likely to be clear cut, to a couple year old pines.

My first time hunting Hills was in Ohio this year. I can't say that I have much advice for you. @swampsnyper pointed out he was noticing sign up and down the drains going down the side of the Hills. When I was hunting the bottoms I noticed deer cutting across the bottom running up and down those same kind of drainages. Just started looking for big ones that's a deer probably wouldn't want to cross and when they will get to it they would have to go up and down to cross over to the hill or the bottom. It seemed to work okay. I saw a good bit a deer.

Just found this video I missed from DIY Sportsman, seems to answer a lot of questions I have. I am going to see if I can apply some of his hill country tips to my hunts this week. I don't have a lot of spots narrowed down this year but the rut is suppose to be getting going so I'd like to put myself in a decent pinch point.
My take away from his video:
Ravines, Saddles, Thermal hubs, and branches of ridges that meet up together. I've been aware of a few of these terrain features but I don't think I've paid enough attention to them while scouting.

Deer are a lot like humans and will take the path of least resistance normally. Deep ravine they will go up and around the head or down and below. Bottoms are awesome for deer but very hard to hunt bc of swirling winds that are so typical of bottoms.

I don’t have a lot of experience but owned some land for about 5 years that was steep and never really mastered it so take the above for what’s it’s worth.

Cold and windy today. Boat access. Got to my spot and was enjoying a cup of coffee before heading up when another boat Came by. There wasn’t a single other truck in the parking lot. He slowed down and pulled up beside me and aasked if I was hunting and where. He asked and said ok because I’ll be going up right there (pointed 75 yards down the bank to the next drainage.) He was nice and everything but it’s a shame we got thousands of acres to hunt and by boat none the less and someone is going to park in right beside me. Wind was about 15 mph and started to flurry (big deal in Alabama). I lasted 6 hours before I got cold, bored and stiff. Trying somewhere fresh in the am.

The only flurry here in South Bama is at the Golden arch, but I agree to cold. Wind is gonna be better tomorrow.

Suppose to be close to rut but I just don’t think they’re there yet.1002D625-7A32-4D02-A2D9-7D46ABB27521.png

@gcr0003 did you swap guns for this morning? Looks like you dumped the lever for a slug gun maybe?
Idk what I’m doing anymore haha. It’s a 308 pump called a Remington 780 I believe. I’ve never killed a deer with a gun. Taking the bow back out this afternoon.

Saw 3 does walking in on the ridge across the way. They took off into the pine thicket but never blew. By the time I got in the tree I saw a small 8 pt coming out on to the same ridge. Need them to cross on this side which is public. A10F88CC-1163-4BFA-873D-6EBB14017C73.png

Watching a yearling doe at 50-60 yards now got about 20 mins

Just missed on a small 4pt, he was really moving.., didn’t help I clipped a limb and shot 30 when he was 20. Oh well looks like the smalls bucks are cruising.
