Team 12 Thread

All right I got a question for some of you veterans. I went in this morning and didn’t see a good place to set up so I ended up doing a lot of walking I could never find what I wanted so I just kept walking ended up doing about 3 to 5 miles and some really steep stuff. During that walk I found a ton of scrapes. During that walk I found a ton of scrapes scrapes. It’s somewhere in the rut right now so most the scrapes haven’t been used in a couple weeks however there was still a ton of scrapes. Here’s the question. Do a lot of scrapes equate to a more even Bucks to doeratio and therefore the bucks are scraping more because of Competition or does that mean that there is likely a lot of small box in the area. I did find some fairly large rubs however so I still know there’s some good ones mixed in there. I had never seen this many scrapes and was just curious what your thoughts were.

Wish I could help you but I hunt in an overhunted region with a low deer density and don't come across too many scrapes so I'm a noob in that department. Good question for sure, got me curious now.

Honestly don't know the answer myself even though I definitely consider myself a veteran hunter. Some areas just tend to get tons of scrapes that never get hit again while others will have one scrape that gets used a lot (often referred to as a community scrape). Community scrapes tend to pop up in the same spot year after year.

Yea I found 25 scrapes and 14 Rubs.
Here a few.

and yea I found two nice community scrapes in early october that I was getting what seemed like every buck and doe in the area coming by on a regular basis, then it went away.14A14F02-A68E-4807-858E-855453410B7A.pngABEF4E73-6041-4A58-87F6-C2CB187DC266.png7C62B187-657C-41B0-A80B-084AE8066F54.png86552065-04E5-4ABC-A17E-35A0529FA176.png58AD0D81-5478-4BC9-84DC-00905E45E174.png80BA7360-9F45-42AA-9C39-72532047D423.png

Its a tricky question. Big and small bucks while cruising hit scrapes or create new scrapes. That community scrape sometimes is the size of your car hood. When it comes to rubs on trees. The only way that I can tell its a big rack buck is how high the rub is on the tree. I've seen spikers rub huge trees too. Bigger deer with bigger rack can rub higher.

No scientific methodology here. Not sure any of it refers to buck/doe ratio.

Good news - deer are in your area!

Yea there are. I just gotta figure out how to hunt them. Check out this stud I pulled from a card on a camera someone left this summer on this very same logging road I walked yesterday. Check the date, this Saturday two years ago broad daylight.

I find one open spot on the logging road that is about a 15 yard perimeter. And a big oak tree that I could climb. Would that even be worth my time hunting? It would be just luck to catch one walking the logging road and it would be a quick shot.

They’re somewhere in and around the rut I just don’t know where. The other pictures I have of this particular deer From two years back during this time he was working the scrapes And licking branch during this time.

Im also looking to upgrade, one positive note of not harvesting a buck yet is that I've still got two buck tags in my pocket for archery. So I've got till Jan 15th to put down a swamp donkey for us :)

Generally speaking the more scrapes and rubs the more even the buck to doe ratio but I can tell you with my personal experience is that when there are a lot of does and a few bucks, there seems to be a few less scrapes and rubs and the intensity of the scrapes and rubs is less. When there are more bucks competing, the sign just looks used more and there is more of it. Again, these are my personal observations over a long time hunting but there are some regional differences and other factors that play into this. I agree with another poster here, you got good sign so set up and try it out!!

Well I wasn't in the saddle this evening, I only had about an hour left of daylight and was going to try and put up a camera. Also took the shot gun and rattling bag. I got up close to a thicket and just tickled as they say the bag along with rubbing up against a tree. Only did it for maybe 30 seconds and told myself in about 15 mins I'll do it again. Well nothing ever came in and as I was picking up the bag I started again and I looked and seen a couple of deer running away. Can't say or not if I called them in the first time, I also couldn't tell what they were. I assume small bucks that I would have been glad to shoot one of them. Almost got it done. Confidence is starting to get higher and higher, which this time last year was non existent. Ready for the weekend.

Well I’m out here in the thick stuff. Logging road With the 3030 lever gun where I’ve had multiple cam pics of bucks cruising mid day. Gonna see if I can touch one with my barrel here.

Broad day close range with AK. For you youngins who know some waka flocka haha.

Wind is screwy on this ridge and I had a deer blow that I didn’t see at 8:30.

9 I hit a bleat and heard a clear as day grunt.

10 had a outside the ears and tall 4pt walking perpendicular to the loggin road straight for me. Had the 3030 ready to eat but I gave him a pass. As a young hunter it’s nice to know I don’t have to kill every thing. Plus I’m trying to upgrade my 4 pt. He came into 8 yards and I’m only 12 foot in the tree se it felt super close. I love these types of encounters. Maybe his big brother will be behind him.
Really fun morning!

I’ll be out this afternoon again. Going to try my JX3 for the very first time. Finally another doe day and then it comes in again starting Monday for a while so maybe I can add 5 points for us soon

Dont hit the snooze button more than once. You will love the jx3 and be nappin in no time. Take account of how many times you have to adjust after initial set up and compare that to movement/adjustment/fiddling in your other diaper saddle

I’m considering getting one. please let me know your first impressions. Are you bow or rifle hunting?

Slug gun. I’ve never tried bow from it but just sitting in it at my house I still don’t see how I could shoot a bow from it (others have no issues so I just have to do it and see how it goes). Gun I can definitely see it working great

I don't know what's come over me with this recent storm that dumped 18" of snow, dropped the temperature this morning down to 1 degree F and pretty much ended my bow season, but I find myself getting very irritated looking at pics from our southern brethren.

Maybe I'm coming down with the flu...:tonguewink:

Shoot it’s just getting nice here. Upper 20s in the morning mid to high 40s by 2 then back down by sunset. We suffer through a lot of heat for a couple measly cool days. Hope y’all got your milk and bread. My kin folk in Williamsport PA got about 20 inches this past week.
