Team 12 Thread

Fortunately, or unfortunately, my season just got extended by another week if I so choose. DNR added two more weekends of special "any weapon" hunts in CWD zones in order to try to meet testing goals for the season.

Even though you may not feel it at the moment, the extension is a good thing. I too was having a really bad season and couldn't wait for it to be over. That was until my last hunt, which now ranks as one of the best days of hunting I've ever had, when everything finally fell into place and worked out and became a day I will never forget. Now with a renewed enthusiasm to hunt I'm saddened that the season is about over.

It's tough to keep your head in the game when you're taking a beating every outing but stick it out because you're one encounter away from a memorable hunt.

Solid words of encouragement!

I was talking more from the herd standpoint. Testing compliance wasn’t high enough during the original season (they figure <10%) that they had to extend it to meet quota and keep the herd numbers down. That’s unfortunate. Chopping the herd will make things tough in future years without a doubt.

I’m stoked to have an extra weekend of hunting! My wife wasn’t too thrilled when I told her though.

Saw something yesterday at work that I had never seen before. It’s December 8th and bucks are breeding does

What state are you in?
This is NW Georgia. It was at Red Top mountain state park. Our “projected”rut was beginning of November. If that’s true, I’d say this is the second round? However I’ve yet to see any chasing and my experience has always been late late November into early December for the rut. All rut activity I have seen personally has been after thanksgiving.

Well I think I read that there are usually a few outliers that come in early and late. If it was Alabama I wouldn’t be surprised. We barely have any pockets that go into full rut, instead we have deer breeding throughout the state from late November through March. I’m hunting a area in Alabama that has a full rut in December but aI also saw this spotted fawn last week. Dunno how old she is so young and small that I figure she was a fairly late one 0A5DFC5A-14D8-47A6-BCEA-08BBB33E5431.png

It always seems to me that my cameras get pictures and I see things when I can’t hunt, when I’m at work and not in the woods. Super frustrating

Well don't be too frustrated the camera has the advantage of never having to go home or work or anywhere else. It can just stay in the woods forever watching

This one came down the hill at 4:10 and was super spooked for some reason. She was stomping her foot looking past my tree for about 10 minutes while I was up there shivering to death since 7am. She turned to walk away and I almost couldn't draw my bow back I was that stiff! It was a literal 15 second struggle to get to my anchor. That threw me off and I didnt pay attention to distance and watched the arrow fall short and hit her in the rump. Well I'm a true believer in heavy "plan B" arrows after this arrow went stern to stem and I watched her drop after a 90 yd sprint. Even though I saw where she piled up I was able to follow the bloodtrail easily in the fading light.

Congrats! Way to wait it out and get it done.

Well I was off Covid break this week so I’m back to being a weekend warrior. It’s suppose to rain all weekend. Y’all got any tips or advice for hunting in the rain? Worth the time?

As long as it's not a heavy down pour deer will go about their business as usual. It's only us humans who think the world stops because of rain. Of course sitting there getting wet is not fun though.

I'm going a couple hours to camden al for the wife's work Christmas party this weekend and they got some shooting houses. I guess I'll be doing that.

Yea plus they’re rutting right now so I can’t afford to not be in the woods

And if it is a heavy downpour the best time to be in the woods is right before it stops. You'll see a spike in activity right after a heavy rain stops.
