That’s absolutely the right call, if your off blood & you think it’s guts it will die overnight or early tomorrow. Sucks about rain, that plus a gut hit would be an awesome track for a dog…..,All - I need some help.
The shot was a little low and back but looked good. The buck hunched and then ran hard. I thought the reaction was good. I didn't recover the arrow. We gave the deer about an hour then started to track. Dark red blood. The blood trail was not good, quarter size spots here or there. After about 200-300 yard we lost blood. I decided to back out. The deer seemed to be travelling down hill but never bedded down. I'm thinking liver shot. I'm going to go back out in about 6 hours. Rain here tonight so I won't be trailing much blood. No dogs around to call.
I'll try to post a video of the shot once it's uploaded. Any advice is appreciated.
Yes sounds like a liver shot to me. If in doubt, back out. If the overnight rain washed the blood trail away and you didn’t see or hear him crash or have any idea where he may have gone ( I’m going to suggest his likely bedding area), then you’ll have to grid search. Look in swales and lower lying areas in or near his bedding area. Mortally wounded deer will tear up the ground a lot too, hopefully in daylight you’ll be able to pick up on some of these clues. Also, try to visualize where he ran and identify more stationary objects on that suspected flight path he took. Rocks, logs, sides of trees sometimes will hold blood better and be consistent compared to leaves and ground duff. Be sure to look up on the sides of trees and brushy spots not just directly on the ground. Typically a liver shot deer is a terminal deer. Good luck and don’t give up.All - I need some help.

@HaunSolo whats the word? Did you bring a dog in this morning?
That sucks man. Don’t beat yourself up too bad and definitely dont sweat the points. We are usually the hardest on ourselves. So I got back out around 4 this morning. We went to the spot of last blood and Friday searched for 3 hours. We covered a lot of ground. No deer. Sorry guys. I covered all of my property and the neighbors and I couldn't find him.

If your arrow is back and has any gut on it at all, everyone I’ve read says back out at give them minimum of 8 hours. Most trackers will tell you the same. I hit way back two years ago and backed out and found that deer dead 60 yards away. Did you ever find your arrow? Did you ever get the shot posted on YouTube? Id be curious to see if
Sorry again man, I know how bad that sucks.
Oh cool on seeing the otters!First sit of opening day. I’ve see 6 otters, 1 alligator, 37 mosquitoes, a few squirrels and one lone doe out of range. I may sit until 11 since I’ve been getting some 10:45 pics pretty regularly. Good luck today team.
Well I'm back in the same spot as yesterday. I know I've made quite a commotion from this spot over the last 24 hours but I saw 3 shooter bucks in a field not far from my spot this morning on my way out.
I did end up calling a guy with tracking dogs. Based on the info I provided he thought that the deer most likely was not mortally wounded(but he couldn't be 100% without bringing his dog out). He gave me some great information regarding when to back out, etc... and what I could have done better in the scenario. Just want to say thanks to you all for your advice as well.
Here's a link to the video of the deer and his reaction. It's just GoPro so it isn't very good.
Yeah that’s tough man. How many yards away was he when you shot? It’s hard to tell in the video. Thanks for sharing.
Dang man way to go! Way to redeem yourself!I redeemed myself! Team three will be getting 13 points once I get the pictures posted!
