Ok good news bad news! I didn’t see a thing this morning but did learn that 25 is too warm for the iwom…. I went & got permission to continue searching for that doe ( more on that in a sec) I took maverick back to last blood & trailed specs for another 200 yds & finally called it made 2 big laps checked 2 drainages & every blowdown. No dice, she lived to fight another day. I did get to roughly survey the 26 acres 1 property away from me though. So back to the landowner. I pulled in the driveway as a lady was coming out onto the porch. Introductions & small talk , she’s the daughter of the lady that owns the place & lives next door. Her husband used to bow hunt but has shoulder problems & they haven’t had venison in years. I offered to stock them up & am gonna go back later this afternoon with some elk steaks, sika backstraps & some whitetail straps. I know that doesn’t equal permission but I’ve been trying to catch someone outside for over a year now. I don’t even want access up anywhere near their house, just the 8-10 acres in the river bottom…..

No luck tonight, still trying to fill one more tag! I did watch some turkeys fly up to roost. Beautiful evening and moon.

The turkeys have been fun to watch my last few hunts. Have got to watch them hang out in the roost in the mornings and fly down and scare the crap out of some deer. They’re so vocal when there’s 15 or so of them grouped up.

I’ve had another late night of watching foot ball. But, I plan on being in the stand in the morning once again. I’ll sleep when I’m dead lol. I did have this one show up a couple of days ago. He’d be a damn good one if he wasn’t missing leg. He will get shot if he shows up though. He may not be the biggest, but he’s got some mass. Fortunately I only have to walk 60yds out the front door to get to this spot.

Well, the snow didn't bring the movement I was hoping for, but it brought enough for me to get two doe's this morning. Still hunted my way downwind of a good doe bedding area. Found a tree and was barely set up when the first one popped over the next ridge over at about 75yds. While it was expiring, mom stood up from her bed about the same distance and I barely caught her movement, semi thick. Dropped her, too.

I misjudged the first deer, thought it was an adult doe but it was a buck fawn. Not the deer I wanted to shoot but it will taste delicious! Mom (pictured) is a real nice doe, great meat yield, so it should balance out. The pack out was grueling, mostly cause the traction on my boots is apparently done for. Hills, snow and bald tires don't mix but having a pair of trekking poles saved me from countless falls.

I think I'm done deer hunting for the year. Still got one more tag, but not sure I need any more meat after these two and the 8pt from Ohio. Good luck to all of you the rest of the season, this has been a lot of fun keeping up with you guys and I really liked how everyone has been cheering for each other. That's what it's all about! I couldn't have asked to be on a better team. If any of you guys are ever in northern Michigan and wanna chase deer or trout, give me a shout!

got together with the extended family on Saturday for an annual deer drive on their farm. I was a driver and my son was a shooter. He got some shooting but didn’t connect. Need to get back to the range with the 308 as it seems his scope got bumped off. I saw a couple and heard a few others blow out ahead of me but too think for any shots. There are some doe hunts with the gun ahead yet in December and archery closes in my area end of January so I’m sure I will get in a handful more sits in before switching to indoor targets. Man time flies when you are having fun!

Man take a week off & get back out. I talk like that after a mean pack out of 2 deer!!!

After about 9 hours round trip in he car to get my daughter back to school, it starts misting rain as we get close to home. There are deer out everywhere, it’s about 40 degrees when we pull in & my wife says why don’t you run out & shoot us a deer. Green light from the Mrs! I went 15 mins down the road to a private spot that got hammered yesterday for the opener but I doubted that anyone would be out in the rain. I slipped in to a big draw & the wind at my back actually… but in a spot that wasn’t likely to have deer bedding I made it 10 yards quietly down the draw & looked to my left & there were a pile of does I shouldered my gun & they exploded 50 yds away. I waited for the biggest doe that stopped to look back & she did at about 115yds. I squeezed off & saw white belly as I looked for the next candidate….. it was super thick as they scattered & I never got another shot. But that’s filling the freezer the easy way!

Well guys, my 2023 luck has continued this morning. To be honest I'm still sitting here in disbelief, I've never missed/blown it on so many opportunities in a single year in my life. :tearsofjoy: I've been hunting locally since Thanksgiving and actually been seeing a good number of deer during daylight hours, more than I am used to seeing this time of year. The problem has been that they've all been does/fawns and young bucks. The issue is that I'm just not ready to shoot a doe with a firearm (the longbow is another story) yet and we have APRs here so the young bucks are off the table. I have been encouraged though with the consistent numbers I've been seeing so I've been hitting it pretty hard.

This morning I took the muzzleloader out and set up in an area that should have been good for the east wind we were to get. I was still getting my upper layers on right at first light when I saw the first deer walking at me. I hadn't even primed the muzzle loader yet. I manage to get the breach open, primer in and breech closed without spooking it in the early morning stillness. No worries, small 3 point buck went by at 7:35. At 7:50 three deer break out of the cedars and run into the hardwoods looking behind them. I wait and nothing else appears. At 8:40 I see a deer walking directly at me . . . its the 3 point making another pass after presumably make a loop around. Wait, there's two others following him, a 6 that, although small is legal and I'd take at this point of the season and a bigger Tbd but also definitely legal. They're walking downwind in a bachelor group along the edge of the cedars headed directly at me. At about 120 yds the 6 point turned and went into the cedars out of sight. The other two came out into the hollow I was overlooking and lo and behold the third deer is a petty decent 8 point. They stand out there about 100 yards away eating some crusty looking brush for about 10 minutes. I have a clear shot at the 3 but the 8 is in a thicket offering no shot. Eventually the 3 point heads up the hill to the west. I scope him thinking "This is great, when the 8 follows him I'll take him when he hits the open area." Unfortunately it never works the way you expect. Upon the little buck's departure the 8 turns around and starts walking directly away from me. When he hits an open area all I can see is his butt and rack. I hold on him until he finally turns a bit and I have a quartering away shot at about 140yds. I touch it off and he runs toward the cedars behind some brush but he never comes out the other side. I figure its possible he's down there but I start reloading anyway.

I get reloaded and look up and I see him walking leisurely up a ridge in the direction the 3 went about 180 yds away. Darn - missed him but he's not to spooked by it. I get a rest off the tree and hold in the next opening. He gets through it before I can get on him. Up to the next opening . . . he walks into it and stops and I figure him to be a good 200yds away. I hold the crosshairs just on the line of his back and touch off another one. He breaks and runs over the hill. I wait a half hour before getting down and then pack up my stuff and leave it at the base of the tree (I have to walk back by on my way out). I go up there I find his tracks and actually can see where my bullet hit as it blew a bunch of dirt through the snow. No hair, no blood nothing. To be sure I tracked him about 300 yds in the snow and never saw any blood - clean miss. Hopefully he's not too spooked, he was walking again within 100 yds, and I can get another chance at him.

At least your getting some action. I've had a lousy season so far and it will be over Saturday. Very few sightings and no shots for me this year which is very disappointing as it was shaping up to be a banner year. Also, 2 of my 3 target bucks are known dead along with another great non-typical stud that I never knew existed and all where taken within a mile or so of my home smh :disappointed: Maybe it's time I spend more time fishing instead:tearsofjoy:

Found a dead buck while still hunting through a piece this afternoon. Coyotes had it picked pretty clean. Didn’t see anything else. Happy for gun seasons to be done till Christmas so the woods can settle down and I can get back in camo with the bow in hand.

Who all is still out and hanging, I'm still trying to tag one more (will not help with points) Just checking in to see how everyone is doing. I'm just sipping coffee and waiting to walk back behind the house to a small private spot. Two of my boys are coming by later to do a little rabbit hunting. Tomorrow begins one of many family get togethers for supper. Have a great weekend!
