Team 5 Thread

Sunday, Oct 1. Just antsy to go and I like to give my clothes a day to dry and air out outdoors after the permethrin treatment when it’s humid like this. You all know how it is; pack things, pace around, put in fresh batteries in lights, pace around, check lights, pace around, check pack again for everything. Going to go out and buy a rope of tags tomorrow and hope I don’t eat too many of them. I even grab a fall turkey tag just in case. Last year I almost got to use it, you just never know and I’m an opportunist.

I am finally in the woods and ready to go

Stayed until it hit 87 late this morning then called it a day. Wasn’t much moving at all in the woods overall, didn’t see a single deer. Good to just go spend a few hours in the saddle in the woods and use the new sticks and platform on something on than a tree in the backyard for practice. Late this week and next weekend looks much more like fall weather.

Damn, SC must’ve hit the weather jackpot. Was 82 for a high. Spent 5.5 hours hanging in the shade and breeze this afternoon on the backside of a pond overlooking the edge of a bedding area with great browse. Only would up seeing 2 deer and they were in the field and they fed into the oaks at the other end of the bedding I was on. Would’ve gotten busted for sure if I would’ve tried to set up on that end.

Did see a fresh scrape on the field edge under a water oak.

2 more weeks till my season opens… I’m getting impatient. I’ve got a couple slammer bucks to chase before the rut stirs things up.

Any of y’all have target bucks in mind?

No target bucks for me, public land only and tried to run my first cam this year but that didn’t work out for me. Going to put in for a day or two midweek time off a couple weeks from now and try to catch somebody moving prerut. Hope you get one of yours!

Wisconsin here. Glad to join the team! Clipped a nice doe on opened but didn't retrieve her. Hoping to get out this weekend with the cold front that came through. Good luck to all and have a safe successful season!

Here's my #1 this year. Have 3 years of history with him, but he's clearly at least 4.5, I'm thinking 5.5.

That’s a great deer indeed!

The wood lot (rare for SC) I hunted last weekend seems to have a lot of does nearby. Our bucks will start chasing good before the end of the month so I’m expecting positive things from it.

I spent some time today clearing some of the underbrush on my property. Kinda making some funnels for pushing the deer towards some of my hotspot trees. Was going well until I buried the tractor in the road side ditch:fearscream:

Gonna need a tractor to get the tractor out.

I’ve got my pack all redone and clothes switched out and ready. Lows in the 40s now and highs in the 50s is a good chance from the 80-90 of last week, just takes a bit to decide on the right clothes for it and put a couple different things in the pack. Last weekend I forgot my knee pads, not the end of the world but I’ll be more comfortable now. Ready to hit the woods tomorrow during a cold front here and hope some deer are moving!

Does your PTO have enough power to set that blade down and lift the tractor up?

Saw a good amount of deer so far today, just nothing quite in range to let an arrow loose at. Been telling myself I should pack it in for the last hour but it seems like deer are moving and I’ll never know if I missed out on a chance if I go home. I’m comfy, got a couple snacks and water, and half a can of Cope. Cold front in October in Iowa seems like a better time to be in the saddle than the recliner so I’m going to keep “hanging” around so to speak.

Stuck it out until the end, no luck for me today. Going back into the same spot tomorrow. Plenty of deer action, I’m as close to a bedding area as I can comfortably get, and I’m in a good spot where I catch 3 intersecting trails. Today they just didn’t move on one my way. That happens. Mind if their own and all. So I didn’t get one today, that’s the negative.
Positives were I felt REALLY good with my gear setup, best I’ve felt since I started the journey a year or so ago. Loved my upgrades to sticks and platform; everything felt super solid. I couldn’t budge my platform so I feel confident getting on edges to get more angles there without worry. 40 degrees with a 10 mph north wind and clothing was on point. Finally, I was in the saddle for 13-14 hours (longest sit I’ve done) so I know I can do long days. I’ve done all day sits but later in the year they were shorter.
Obviously not putting a deer in the freezer is going to mean not a successful day to many. Going to respectfully agree to disagree with those folks and enjoy the time doing what I love and look forward too all year.

Killed a doe this evening. Sat a field edge and she got through my good opening and I had to shoot her through a tight opening. I shot her at the far left of this picture.
