Team 5 Thread

Hahaha!

I’ve been slacking. Haven’t hunted this weekend. Well, not deer hunting. I shot doves yesterday.

Good hunt, but it was weird because we didn’t kill half the birds we should have. They were flying low, low, low. Like skimming the sunflowers low.

Had 8 come in on me last night from the wrong direction… I was set up for them to come in from in front of my, but they all came in from behind me. One doe busted me and it was game over. I’ll try again this evening on a different spot that’s not blew out.

8 deer?! Wow. That’s amazing.

Hearing y’all talk about your hunts is getting me fired up! My season doesn’t open for three weeks and I’m buried in work and fall house projects. I need to set aside some time to get prepped. Once the season opens I’m excited to get after a big buck I’ve been studying for several years. The intel I gained since last season should be enough to make a good play on him in the couple weeks leading up to the rut. I call him lawn boy…

Go have my meeting tomorrow evening to find out what zones and how many weeks I get for my urban opportunity. Last year was my first year doing it and my first real serious year of archery hunting (going out 30ish times). I was real focused on big mature does and proud of myself getting 3 but you need 5 for a guaranteed buck tag the next year so I need to adjust a little. Not willing to shoot anything with spots but I need to remember a mature doe doesn’t have to be 4-5 years old. I’ll be mixing in my PTO I’ve saved up to go after a buck, targeting more midweek opportunities there. Looking forward to getting back in a tree and trying to keep up with some of you. Hopefully if I can fill my freezer y’all don’t hate seeing does down cause I’m gonna fling an arrow or two if I can. Pride doesn’t feed my kids. Lol

Ain’t nothing wrong with shooting does where it’s legal.

In My state a hunting license comes with two buck tags. To get a doe tag you have to put in for a lottery. This is my first year being awarded a doe tag…

Good point, I should’ve included more context for the Iowa tags. For a resident we get 1 archery tag and it’s either sex. So 1 deer, use it how you’d like to. I opted to start doing the extra things for the urban opportunity where I am because that gives you unlimited doe tags for those zones and if you harvest 5 does you earn a buck tag for the next season. That means I can fill my freezer and potentially get two buck tags next year if I work harder at it.
Shotgun season can be any sex or buck only depending on your county; I quit going shotgun when my dad couldn’t go anymore but we were buck only the last few years I did go. Found this picture from the last year I went. I’d never gotten one of the enclosed stands before but the guy couldn’t make it so I got it once. No snow, crazy. IMG_7057.jpeg

To give you guys some context, in the unit in middle tenneseee where I am from and do most of my hunting, you can shoot 3 does per day, every day from September 23 to January 12th on the standard deer license with varying weapons depending on how far into the season you are. Subtracting the few youth days, that means the average hunter can shoot about 300 does a year if they were industrious enough to find 3 every day

Got 10 weeks in the urban zones from Oct 1-mid January. 3 different areas, I’m familiar with 2 of them. Was pleasantly surprised to get that many weeks, hopefully I can fill my freezer and contribute something to the hunger program stuff around here. Of course that’s the goal, also I chance I get zero because hunting.

One can’t have too much ground venison and sausage.

I’d like to replace as much beef as possible this year. First year my family has really experienced it and they liked it all, lucky I guess because I’ve enjoyed it since I was a kid. Wife went from I’m not sure about this but I’ll try it to did you happen to save a backstrap for my birthday dinner? For sure doing more ground and sausage this year though. I was worried they wouldn’t like it and did more sticks and jerky last year. That stuff is great but now knowing they like it I think we can save some money.

I don’t like to brag about expensive places I’ve been but yesterday I went to the grocery store….

Next time you get all high brow and decide to go back in there head to the meat counter and ask if they sell pork trimmings. If so then you’re in the sausage business. Mine sells it in 5lb packs for $5, but you have to know to go back and ask for it.

I buy fatback right from the farm

Love fatback. I’m talking about straight fat to use to make sausage
