Team 5 Thread

Killed a doe this evening. Sat a field edge and she got through my good opening and I had to shoot her through a tight opening. I shot her at the far left of this picture.

Didn’t see the hit, but heard it and knew she was toast. Hard quartering away. In….

Oh yeah, that big heavy arrow with the big heavy broadhead sliced a rib in half….

Excellent!

Weird day today, maybe I’m spoiled but I’m used to seeing deer and I didn’t see a one today. In about 8 hours in the saddle I saw one coyote. Gave it up mid-afternoon, decided to take in my sons soccer game. Remembered there aren’t a lot of people in full camo at youth soccer games in the suburbs. Counting me today, one.

According to the standings we are about square in the middle of the pack. Team ones lead is pretty significant but the contest has really yet to get going.

When do most of you focus your hunting efforts?

I’ll be pretty steady from mid October - the end of the year. Though once it gets really cold and we have snow, I’m likely to put less effort into hunting from a tree. Tracking is my absolute favorite way to hunting…

I’m on vacation from work for a month starting next Wednesday. This is the longest I’ve ever taken off during deer season. Hopefully I’ll hit the pre rut right and have some good cold fronts move in. It seems like my best deer movement is the last 10 days of October.

I feel like since I can’t hunt mornings in the week I sort of relegated myself to more of a weekend warrior other than a few days off sprinkled in here and there. For instance I took off 2 days in the first week of November that I’ll go midweek all day sits. I’ve got 5 days of time off left to take and I am thinking I’ll go for a couple of them in a week or two and spread others out here and there.
The main piece public I hunt is ag fields all around it. That’s good and bad. It’s corn this year and I am very low success rate for even seeing deer until the corn comes out.
Trying to update my mindset to just getting out any day I can so I plan to do some evening sits during the week, just have to make it through a couple more days and then my wife is home evenings to watch the kids. First week had too many soccer games, school conferences for my kids, and my wife having conferences as a teacher.
Still put in close around 25 hours in the saddle so far this year, honestly it’s just 3 days but I usually have SOMETHING in range by now so while it’s silly to be frustrated in 3 days here I am! Haha
A piece of that is just my choice though. I probably could’ve taken a shot on a doe that was right on the property boundary line and right on the edge of my range but that’s just not me, wasn’t comfortably ethically on either part of that.

I have to go to Florida next week then I’m off till Nov 15. I had leave approved starting next Thursday so those two days I’m losing may well extend me to the 17th, lol.

I’ll still have more leave to burn before the end of the year.

It kinda occurred to me today that the 5 days I’m saying I have left is all I let myself in my head, I’m carrying 5 over. So I could use those too.

Shoot I might need to; boss told me I wasn’t going to get one of the days off I already had approved and I said you can write me up now or then but I won’t be here. I rarely speak up and just put my head down and work but this time I said PTO means Prepare The Others, I won’t be in.

My season opens on Monday morning and as of now the weather report couldn’t be better for a serious play on one of my favorite known bucks. I figure I’ve only got a weeks time before he’s steadily on the move. So, over the next few days I’ll be doing my final prep and making a hundred backup plans in the event the weather shifts.

I finally got out last night, after just over a week out and it was one of my first hunts this season where I didn’t see a deer.
About 6th hunt, felt more efficient and relaxed.
Last week I was finalizing moving , work travel , the waves have been incredible since about the opener and I got a decent foot injury stepping on an old lobster pot last Sunday . Winner winner new tetanus shot.
But I’m back , I have had two bucks and a few doe just out of recurve range , hope to get after em this weekend and picking a couple days off end of October/ early Nov for early rut / muzzleloader.
My wife went and scheduled college visits first week of Nov.? - so I hope to build “points” for my next out of state trip.

Nice work you guys getting out there

Going to head out after work in a couple hours and try an evening sit out. Just kind of a gut feeling that I should be out there tonight. Wind is going to switch from 5-10 out of the south today to 15 or so out of the north overnight with more rain chances coming too. Might as well see if anything is out and about for awhile.

Deer were moving, couple nice bucks out, one almost right after I got there and one right at sunset. Passed on a very small deer with 4 minutes of legal light left. Drew back and settled the pin but realized I would’ve just been shooting it to say I shot a deer, not what I am after at all, buck or doe. Couldn’t see spots but I’m not so sure that just wasn’t cause it was so close to dark.
I’m seeing a good amount of deer, confident it’ll all come together as the season goes along. Archery hunting ain’t no joke, I’m glad I got into it. Feel like I’ve learned more about deer in the last 3 years than I did in 20 some gun hunting and have a lot more fun encounters that are a lot closer with unaware deer.

Didn’t see a darn deer today. 7 hours in the tree. Pretty dreary day with plenty of rain, 15-20 mph north wind, temps in the 40’s. Since it’s still pre-rut I suspect they just kinda bedded up and didn’t do a ton of moving around but I’ve been wrong many times. I did take a midday break for a couple hours so I’m sure that’s when they all came through.

Got things drying off and oil on the broadheads so they don’t rust. I’ll get back out tomorrow morning and continue to give it the old community college try.

oof, I've had those days. Rough.

Appreciate you guys pulling the weight for the team. Congrats to those that have killed. Clipped another doe today to try and get meat in the freezer and also points on the board. Found hair where I hit, zero blood. And no arrow. I think it's in her but looked for 2 hours. I'm going to look again tomorrow as a last ditch effort. Started using annihilator broadheads recently and waiting to punch one through. Not sure if it's that, most likely me. It'll come, but man talk about a confidence downer. 0-2. Wanted to go in the am but going to the range first to make sure nothing is bumped on my sights. But the challenges make us stronger. That's bow hunting. Then hopefully the pm I can get on the board. The freezer is pretty empty. I went out for pheasant with the dog in the am, and got a bird. But sadly we don't get points for birds. Anyways, this message was winded. Looking forward to team 5 winning this.
