Team #7

Pretty uneventful youth season for me, my daughter decided it was too cold to hunt Saturday evening. Probably the best choice considering how much rain we got after she decided she didn't want to go. Sunday was busy with other events and was just as cold and wet. Eyeing the calendar hard now to decide what days I'm telling the wife I'll be hunting on

Well my morning was a cluster. Went out this afternoon and buggered that one up too but I did have deer in range. Longer post about that in live from the saddle.

Some success using the bleat can. What's the comparable idiot proof buck call? Blocks in a bag you rub thing?
A decent grunt tube and a bleat can - only two calls I carry. Never cated to much for rattling.

Nice buck @jhunter13 ! I've never called a nice one in, one of those things I only ever "read about on the internet". I don't even carry calls anymore.

Took my boy to camp this weekend. He got to experience his fist bloodtrail, one of my cousins shot a 2.5 year old 8 point right below the cabin. That was a blast. We messed around with squirrels a little but the weather wasn't great for them and he is peak impatient. Not pushing it, he's only 5.

Biding my time on getting out myself. Gonna hunt a few days this week. I think Weds and Fri. Tomorrow looks good but I'd have to move heaven and earth to make it out. If the rain moves out this evening, might to get out.

Developing a sore throat and cough this morning though. Ugh.

Big boys are showing up on my cell cams almost daily now. A couple during shooting hours. No midday cruisers yet.

I've had good luck grunting and rattling for bucks in Mid-MO, on private ground, over the years, bleat cans have never been my favorite. The HS True Talker creates a nice sound, I also have a Flextone Buck Collector that works well. On pressured public land you may see adverse reactions to any calling, but if the bleat can is working then calling may not be popular enough around there to have educated very many deer yet.

I have no clue what I'm doing calling, nor do I know how much others do it but it's pressured. I'm hunting maybe 15 miles outside the second biggest city in the state. I went with the bleat can part because it's easy and cheap but also seems the least aggressive of deer calls. Maybe I'll skip grunts and rattling for now. Thanks for the suggestions, I did maybe I'll skip it but if one of those calls is at the store I am ill probably buy one lol

It's nice to have on hand especially in the next two to three weeks if you see a buck that is heading away from you, you can try and coax him back your way. It's always a good idea to call a little softer than you think you need to at first, if you can see a deer watch for reactions, as subtle as an ear turning your way, and adjust. They can peg your location based on sound pretty good so try and "throw" the sound somewhere other than straight at them, either behind you or in the direction of your desired shooting lane. adding ground noise makes it much more believable if you can do that somehow.

Honestly I think most peoples best bet is to get in the right location and sit quietly. I used to use scents, I think that's dumb now. I used to blind call a bunch... I still do some but I think it's better not to. Sometimes when you're sitting there and haven't seen anything though you just think ahhh what if some buck is just outta sight and this will drag him in?! The unknown gets the best of you. When honestly if it's a decent buck they're probably just going to circle down wind and then you're screwed. Several years ago when I was still using a climber I was almost through most of my vacation rut hunting and my wife was at home with my newborn pissed that I was out again. Had been an uneventful hunt so I figured I'd get down early. Pretty sure my climber scraping the tree was mistaken for a buck making a rub and I had one come hauling butt down hill to investigate. Those kind of occurrences make it hard to never blind call haha but again that was a more natural sound. I've got one of the rattle bags you mentioned and I don't think it sounds that real. The short of this is I think you can make any call work when you can see the buck and can read their body language. A few years ago it was early/mid October and I watched an old buck make a rub. He was thrashing this tree and even though it was earlier than I would normally think to have him pissed at another buck his body language just told me he'd want to kick some a$$. Through a grunt at him and he looked my way with his ears pinned. Went back to aggressively rubbing. As soon as he stopped I grunted once more and put the call down. My way he came and that was the end for him.

I've blindly used the doe bleat can more than enough and I struggle to think it's ever worked. If it has, not on anything good. If I blind call now it'll be more natural stuff. Some grunts while shaking a tree/limb to simulate a rub. Or while scraping the ground. I think that's way more likely to work. Just one guys opinion. I just listened to a Beau Martonik podcast where he said he blind calls every 15 mins because he hunts super thick stuff where he can't see 50 yards away and that could make the difference in one investigating. More than 1 way to skin a cat.

Watched a buck hit a field edge scrape on the way in to work today. Visible rack from 75 yards with a tank for a body......I'm questioning my life choices currently

It is 34 degrees, NNW wind at 5, pressure is 30.37, good moon, peak pre-rut is on and I am sitting in my office waiting for the webinar I have to host today. Another one tomorrow as well. Freaking missing it. BAD WORDS!! Lots of BAD WORDS!!
You're not alone, buddy. Day in and day out stuck inside. Walk outside to cool weather, fall smells, driving to see deer getting chased, saying all those same words. Hoping my week off will be the payoff.

I took today off, had good movement, saw 5, 1 was a spike chasing a doe and her fawn.

Went yesterday evening and saw 2 spikes, 2 doe and nice young 8 point I gave a pass at 17 yards. Starting to get some good bucks on cam regularly too, should be good this weekend if it dont turn to hot.Screenshot_20231030-183115_Video Player.jpg

Weather looks like it will be warm and sunny this weekend so my daughter will hopefully want to get out there this weekend. I've got Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of next week off and rifle season opens on that Saturday so the odds of me putting up points should be increasing

Happy November team! Best month of the year.

Day 1 of "rutcation".

Spike parade this morning. 3 of them and a doe

Love/hate this weather. Deer on the move but freezing my nuts off. My stint on the IR did no favors to my cold acclimation.

Looks cold. It was 31 here this morning. Supposed to be 30 I think tomorrow for my first morning back in the woods. Heaviest I have dressed this year was a light base layer and a midweight merino top. Most of my sits this year have been in the 80's and 90's. I figure I am going to be cold tomorrow too.
