I am new to saddle hunting this year and like the fact that I can pack in minimal equipment and get to the hunting height that I want and hunt comfortably. I shot a small buck this year during our bow season after about a dozen unsuccessful hunts, but I still had a management tag left. A buddy of mine owns a couple of hundred acres just a couple of hours north of me wanted me to come up during the rifle season and hunt... On opening day he got called in for an emergency at work and he could not get back until after lunch, so I proceeded to "sleep in".
He gets back to camp about one in the afternoon and decides to take a nap himself. 3:00 rolls around and he says it's about time to get ready to go. As we walk out to his elevated, heated deer stand, I stopped to look at deer sign here and there and he tells me not to pay attention we need to get up into the stand.
As we get situated in the deer stand, heat cranked up, some food on the cook stove, five does walk out into the field and I get my rifle ready. He tells me just to hold off for a little while...A 10-point buck walks out in front of us at 250 yd, he proceeds to pull his 7 mm mag up, scopes the deer, fires one shot and literally drops the deer right there. All of the other deer scatter and he says "let's go get the four-wheeler". I think to myself this is not real hunting... Or is it...
I AM SO JEALOUS... But I will never tell him that...
