"The official saddle hunting backpack thread"

Elkyinzer this is the Popup 28 correct?

I’m trying to like this pack as I have it and the X2. Trouble I have is the storage. I like to have range finder, binos, call, small supply of food very accessible while settled. Can you describe what your carrying and where?

Also like to know how you set up at the base of the tree to climb.

Yeah, it's the Popup 28.

Load shelf is my platform and 3 modded Heliums. Any overflow of cold weather/raingear gets strapped in the load shelf also
Main bag: Game bags, water bladder, any gloves/hats/layers, coat (usually FL Woodbury), pouch with 2 LB/tether and pullup cord
Front pocket: phone charger, knife, saw, hand warmers, rangefinder
Top pocket: CAYG aider, bow hook, any food I want accessible in the tree

I don't generally bring binos

When I get to the tree:
1) Get the sticks and platform out of the load shelf
2) Get what I need to get to the top of the tree (clip rope pouch to saddle, cayg aider, saw if necesssary)
3) Dress bottom layers
4) Strap platform to outside of pack
5) Put first stick on tree, carry other two up on my saddle
6) Climb tree and get setup

Once I get setup if there's any food or my grunt call or anything else I want to make accessible I just kinda arrange it in the pack and leave the zippers open so it's not going to make noise when I want to grab it. My pack hangs on the tree about waist level, so I can easily grab things from it,

I have two. Kifaru Door Gunner and Kuiu Icon Pro 1850.

Thks for posting!!

I've tried a ton of different packs over the years and 3 this season alone. Ive had packs from badlands, kifaru, xop, horn hunter, pack rabbit, timberhawk, off brands etc. I'd have to say my top 3 favorites out of everything I have tried are:

Horn hunter G2
Horn hunter full curl combo
Kifaru shape charge

Being a southern hunter it's hard to be satisfied with a pack all year because temps during my hunting seasons range from 20-90 degrees. A typical day in December could have a high of 70 and a low of 35. When the temps change obviously your pack requirements do too. I am in the process of building a pack that can be used all season for guys in my situation.

You sound like you’re from Arkansas! Let me know what you come up with!

Hard to say without knowing what you wanna carry. I started out the season with an Eberlestock X2 and some sticks. Not using the sticks at this point, and packing spurs. Next season, I’ll drop the pack and use the Predator pack with some bags attached to the Molle webbing and affix my spurs, rope, or sticks to it. The X2 is only 4 or 5 pounds, but I hike in a good bit and Virginia weather is as unpredictable as what you’re describing. With the X2, I pack way more than what I ever need. If I’m going on a an overnight or extended trip, it’ll be my go-to. Otherwise, minimalist.

My pack is more towards the minimalist side. I carry everything in my badlands silent reaper, and have plenty of room for extra clothes, or snacks. If I find that I need to be on the ground, I have the dead ringer hammock chair that goes on the bottom side and straps to my backpack.

I run two different packs depending on where I am hunting. Most of the time I run the mystery ranch pop-up 18. Having the capability to walk in and then pack out a deer in 1 trip under 20lbs is tough to beat. I also have a small tactical molle pack similar to the voodoo with a kifaru frame sheet in it for rigidity for quick hunts. Both have nite-ize ties that can hold my LW mini's, WE Stepps, spurs, perch, or predator depending on what the situation calls for.

I was not aware of the Horn Hunter Full Curl combo until this thread. I'm currently running the X2 but I hunt from a Flex some days and a JX3 some days. My trouble is I need different things depending on which saddle I choose. I'm intrigued by the full curl combo by thinking that day pack may be just the ticket to pack full of things I need with either stand and it looks suited to be able to pull off and attach to the JX3. That would be huge for me.

Let's see them post it up with pics. I went thru so many packs and I think I've found the one (Kuiu 1850 Pro). Here is my go to setup as if now. Whats in the pack. Badlands Pyre jacket and bibs (in these pic the bibs are not in the pack but will fit in there too), Badland bino C/Vortex 10x42, Garmin Gps, range fider, headlamp and flashlight, kill kit, water blatter, first aid kit, rope, deer calls and extra battery's.

Love the setup, very streamlined, organized, looks quiet too. I have similar gear, just two quick questions: 1) What's your climbing method, and where does that fit in? 2) Does the Predator bang against your butt much, and is that problematic or loud? Looks like you wrapped that one rail in paracord for noise, just wondering about if that thing bouncing off the back of your legs gets old, or really not a big deal?

My climbing system are 3 sticks I carry them by hand or use a shoulder strap that I use as a back rest too. I normally climb with the bow on my pack and the platform exactly like how I have it in the picture. The paracord is there so the treads of my boot dosent clip off the edge. As for the platform I think this is the way to go. Doesnt kick my leg and sometimes I forget it's back there. I walk in and attach it to the tree like this. When I climb down just repeat the process. I just need some different type of way to clip the platform instead. I feel like the biners are a little to long.

It's a pretty decent pack system
