Things I'm Changing after Saddlepalooza

I'm going to have to come next year to pitch the one stick....did we not send any champions this year?
I used the one stick once while hunting since I only packed one stick. Didn't do a demo on it though. I don't like it as much as many of the other options available now.

I've never personally heard of a bridge failure on a hunting saddle. I can't really think of what would cause one either unless it is set up wrong from the beginning.

You won't read about them on hunting saddles. Usually you read about them on Treebuzz, Arboristsite, etc forums which flow through my Tapatalk feed. Weaver had a bad rap about 5 or so years ago. There are others though. Just need to dig a little.

It really comes down to how much you are testing your equipment and mobility in the tree. Hunters are generally easy on their equipment. A bridge shouldn't be a failure point when fixed.

It all comes down to risk and I encourage every saddle hunter to evaluate, even quantitate, their equipment and process. In the end, you are accepting the risk.

As I mentioned, if I question my bridge, I also need to question my tether and linemans belt. Each is 11 mm with a ropeman. The three Ropemans introduce the greatest amount of risk. I accept it because I like them.

I learned a lot from being around so many saddle hunters and trying their methods. Here are a few changes I'm likely to change, further test, or buy:

-Buying a pair of Yoder chaps with Tingley ultralight boots. @redsquirrel had these and I was shocked at how light they were, and how well they held up for him over the last year. They would work great in cattail marshes.
-Trying an Amsteel bridge. I love the functionality of my Samson Predator bridge with Ropeman for adjustability. Amsteel is so much lighter and less bulky, but not as adjustable in a bridge. The main reason I like the adjustment is so I can lengthen and toss over my shoulders while walking. So I'm going to try a fixed amsteel bridge long enough to go over my shoulders. It should work, since I had done the same concept with webbing on my old SitDrag.
-Buying a couple more Wildedge steps. I have 4. After playing around with the Cain method and Wildedge aider, and new knot method, I'm going to give them some more testing. I can get roughly the same height with 6 steps (~6lb) and 3 DIY sticks with aiders (~6lb). The sticks are faster, but the steps pack better, especially if I'm only packing a small platform.
-Alternative self filming methods: I'm going to further play around with filming in multiple action cams and Tactacams vs. a camera arm. I'd need to get a system that I really like to stomach leaving the AX100 at home, but ditching the camera arm would mean ditching a pack in early season and cutting my setup time and maneuverability drastically. So we'll see how that goes.
-Amsteel mini lineman's belt. Jess had a mini lineman's belt she used when going around branches. It seems like a great idea.
-More stealth strips. I'm going to stealth strip everything I haven't already stealth stripped, including the Wild Edge steps and rubbing surfaces of the Yoder chaps.

Cabela's has something similar to the Yoder chaps:
Cabela's Instinct™ Men's Accelerator Hip Waders Item: IK-832370
Kind of pricey, but I use them in the cattails with my kayak. Down when it's warm and up when it's wet!

I was looking at those on the plane ride down there. How well do they breathe? Once I held the yoders and Tingley boots, I figured the cabelas ones would be unnecessary at 2x the price. But I've not tried them.

I really like them. They're lightweight, no complaints except price. I wasn't aware of Yoder and they're price prior to buying Cabela's.

lol. Someone is making a killing on those pouches on the ebay market. Kuiu had them in their outlet for $1 last year.

I know , just think if we could all stick up on something when it’s dirt cheap instead of paying retail when we figure out we’re gonna use it......

Could you elaborate a bit on the bridge failures (examples, what part of the system is failing, equipment specifics)? I haven't really heard of any such instances but that is obviously a bit concerning for a new/prospective saddle user.

I have a ropeman 1 and prusik knot on my tether. The ropeman is used for my bridge and the prusik is attached to a biner on my rock climbing harness. I did this so i would not have to worry about a bridge failure. I am using a fixed amsteel bridge, but I like the redundancy. I tested the prusik and tether by pretending to fall and it worked well.

She was using it with a soft shackle, but I wouldn't recommend that. They're pretty fiddly. A tiny carabiner is a better choice IMO.

The soft shackle was super annoying, use a mini carabiner as G2 said. My mini carabiner went right back on it after I got down that tree.

Jess,

You have a better picture of the mini lineman? Trying to get a good understanding of this belt and it’s use, thanks

is there a reason for rimfire was it bc firearms season is out or something.. if not the 22tcm would be a hog slayer check it out

Oh man, what's the cain method? I'm also going to pick up some wild edge stepps, lots of other stuff to think about that's for sure, already put a rim fire on the wish list for piggies next year!

Oh and I'm going to take a file to my climbing spurs gaffs thanks @Erniepower

There are rimfire only areas, center fire only, shotgun ,muzzleloader archery only and archery only areas. The more weapons you have the more ground that opens up to you.

Here are a few photos. I have it girth hitched but I would splice it right on there next time. It expands to about 48 inches which works well. The green pouch that I sewed into my other pouch keeps it from coming out when I take out my lineman’s belt.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you need any other details.

Great post. You all must have been busy down there for the weekend. I didn't see much posting or hear of pig kills. Easy to see why. Thanks for this post. It's very helpful for those of us who couldn't be there. Man, I have a lot to learn.
