Thinking about quartering deer vs dragging out. Thoughts??

We talked about this last year and it made a lot of sense to me so I picked up a Mystery Ranch Mule that has a meat shelf. It has a smallish bag that's attached to the frame with eight clips. I've been thinking of picking up a roll top hauler bag which is a water proof bag that fits between the frame and bag. Not sure if I would use it for meat or warm clothes. I really like this bag. I've used it to pack bags of corn out in the woods and it carries them well. I'm getting too old for dragging out deer.

If you go the roll top route make sure the meat is cool before you put it in there.

Definitely bone out deer and only pack meat where legal. Pictured is an Axis deer loaded up for the hike out.

Mystery Ranch NICE system with arrow hunter (or arrowhead) bag.

On that note, have you used your Stone Glacier pack to pack out any animals? Any feedback? I am totally salivating over a SG Xcurve minimalist, for all my pack needs. Might strap light cheap bag for hunting, but meat shelf for setting up permanent stands, carrying corn and carrying out deer.

I’d say talk me down, but many would cheer me on for spending money. But darn, I really want a SG pack.
I haven't packed an animal out with it yet. I did a 2 night camp in the catskills with it and I've packed around 50 pounds a lot for exercise. I'm always tweaking trying to make it a little more comfortable. One thing I found in my research is that certain packs just seem to fit certain people better. I got a mystery ranch pop up 28 last year that I used for all of my deer hunting. It fits me really well and carries like a breeze. I've probably only had 20 pounds max in it at any one time but it makes me want to try one of their larger packs for overnight stuff. I haven't been able to get away for much backpack camping lately though so it hasn't been a top priority.... a 3 year old really changes things lol.

Just get a different bag that straps to the Pop-Up frame. Or even better make one. I went through my rough draft of a new pack for the frame. I got 90% of the way through, and made an irreparable mistake. The good news is the second draft will go much better. Let me know if you ever need buckles to match up to those on the frame - I've got a guy.

I've also used the 28 for a three day trip. I was able to pack everything I needed for that trip. Granted - it was a group so a few group items were spread amongst us.

I'm hopeful Mystery Ranch will offer two new bags for that frame: One made out of quiet material, and a 35+ size bag.

Look into the packtachs and packnet for the front of it. This thing is awesome. I'm pretty sure @BassBoysLLP turned me on to these. It's perfect for securing a weapon, layers, muddy/wet boots or clothes, or generally anything that doesn't go into the pack. It made the pop-up pretty much perfect for my style of hunting.

Bad news...Illinois requires all deer to come out intact if you haven't checked it in. If checked in and a number has been issued then the deer can be quartered and packed out. However all parts have to come out with it. Hide, bones, etc... A loophole in the law states that to stop the spread of CWD, a carcass has to be buried with at least 6" of dirt. Hmmmmmm...wonder if leaves would work, cause if I work hard to buy a pack and equipment then...I'll shut up now.

Good news...none

I just don’t get it. Maybe I’m naive or uneducated as I’m not in a CWD state, but... a significant portion of the deer population dies of natural causes, car wrecks, wounds from fighting or hunting, and predation. I’d also expect that a good bit of CWD afflicted deer that that are late stage (or whatever you call it when they start acting silly) are killed by predators also. Point is there’s a crap load of carcasses already in the woods, so what’s the difference? If I’m an idiot for thinking this way please kindly give me a little lesson on CWD.

I guess it’s a numbers game?
Hunters killed some where near 145,000 deer last year. Cars /deer collision last year near 7500. Tn numbers
BUT Honestly I have no clue. I mean you shoot a deer it spills blood for a distance before it piles up? How are you going to clean up that mess? Deer are more likely to come across that than sniff down a gut pile IMHO. I don’t make the rules I’m just required to follow them.

The link below makes the most sense for me. Any backpack should work and a knife and you have all you need.

They say it's concentrated in the spine and brain. Gut piles and blood are a lot less likely to spread it.

Living in Illinois, when I do break down my deer and put it my game bags, then place them in my MR pop up 28, I"ll fish out the heart as well as the fat around the intestines and place those in a smaller bag. Either way the heart is coming with me.

Why that fat? That’s a new one to me

That fat is supposed to be really good. As far as spreading CWD I cant see how anything would be more effective than leaving the bones right where that deer died VS most people taking it home and dumping them god knows where.

I haven't used it yet, the first time I tried to take it out it had little white pin worms wiggling around on it.... so I decided to leave it in the woods, haha. Maybe I'll just bring it home and wash the crap out of it next time.

This is why. I saw the meat eater episode and want to try it. I will also bring home the leg bones so I can harvest the marrow.

Ah, this is not what I was thinking of. I’ve seen that on meat eater too. Makes more sense than what I was thinking
