Throw ball setup

I use a cube most of the time. I started with one 14 oz throwball and quickly discovered I needed a second. A second throwball can allow you to retrieve the first one WHEN it gets stuck. You also need a second one to isolate limbs for DRT sometimes. I did make a single ball throw bag out of a cheap amazon bump pouch. It has a 14oz ball, 160 feet of line and I carry 75 feet of camo paracord in there, it is small and will let me put out one preset.

The biggest trick to not get the ball stuck in the first place is no matter how confident you are that you can pull the ball back over the limb, don't. It seems easier to just pull the ball back through, but it will get stuck sooner or later. It is usually sooner. I bet 99% of the stuck throwball issues I have had are from pulling the ball back after throwing it over a limb. It's so tempting to try to pull it back and not lower it down, disconnect the ball, and pull the line back through.

Here's my throwball setup.

The cube is nice but its size requires a larger pack or needing to carry it in hand. This Molle pouch can attach to anything including your belt. Once I get to the tree, I flake the line out on the ground and tie my throwball with a slip knot (I think that's what it's called). When done, I wrap up the throwline as shown in the youtube video.

It's quick, small and lightweight.

You always got good stuff ! That video should be a newbie section sticky! Unless someone introduces you to it, how can one know?

The first time I saw this “figure 8” method, I was kinda of pissed off I never knew about this. I figure 8 my rope, paracord and even the 3’ electric cord that goes from my battery to my ozone unit…….anything except extension cords which I daisy chain. This is how I was planning on getting by without the cube.
BTW, This method works so good, I have rappelled many times forgetting to drop my rope. It has fed flawlessly and I didn’t even realize it til I got down…….that’s after being rolled up in a figure 8 and then folded in half too!

I am gonna try to remember this advice as it makes a lot of sense……

I run 40'. If you're running SRT you can use your preset and/or your throw line to span the gap. Been one or two times I coulda used 5' more or so, but 40' has fit the bill for me. I haven't done any of the double rope techniques where you'd need line up and down. I'd say give that 40' a try and see if it works for you. Saving $$ for the win!
Trying to picture this in action. Paracord is over branch. Then I tie my rope’s tag end to paracord , pull it up. Thread paracord through quick connect ? If I pull that and rope threads itself, I’ll be hitched when it cinches. But I’ll also have to have paracord tied to my quick link so I can pull it back down……I think. Gonna watch a few more videos. Need to study up on all this redirects and basal anchors etc….

You got it. Cord thru link and your pull down rope in place just in case or if your hitch is going to be above you out of reach. I need to learn a bit more on basal anchors myself.

Here is my "freelance throwball bag". For going out to do a preset I user a throwball cube. This one is small enough to carry along on a scout and set one spot if I find a good location without taking the cube. It holds a ball, 160 feet of line and 75 feet of paracord for the preset. I learned to have my paracord premeasured and rolled. I use 75 feet of line for DRT and I want my paracord loop to be no longer than my actual climbing rope.

For pre-season presets, I will carry my throwline in a toolbag, a roll of paracord on a wire frame (shown below) and my slingshot. I use the slingshot to get the line exactly where I want it, pull the throwline up and over, then pull the paracord back up and over. By having the paracord roll staked into the ground, every preset is a custom length with minimal waste.

Once the season begins, I'll switch to the kit from my previous post as it's much smaller and lighter.

The slingshot was built to install antenna wires in trees and works great.

I had some 3/4" copper laying around after some plumbing work and use it for the reel mount. If you zoom in on the fitting near the handle, you'll see that this is sweated on one end and is slip fit on the other. That way, it breaks down into 2 pieces for easier transport.

The trick is knowing your strength and using light fishing line. If you're not careful, you can easily send the weight 100' up in the air. Likewise, too much power tends to get the weight wrapped around tree limbs thus having light fishing line allows you to break it off.

Oh yeah. I got to make one of these.

I made a ball launcher from mostly PVC that uses a bicycle pump. It will send the 15oz ball 50 feet straight up. It is good for isolating limbs in tight spots. It unscrews into two parts for easier transport.

Slingshot for reference.

And here I was thinking that a slingshot with a bowfishing reel would be the system to beat. It looks like you're just using mono and an egg sinker on that?

I was at the big box store the other day and happened upon some collapsible laundry baskets. Anyone use something like this for a mobile throw line setup? What would be bad about it?

Y’all are trying to make this as fun as rappelling! I see it can sure be done many ways, and I already have a sling shot, weights etc…..you got the coolest stuff brother!
How’d you attach the slingshot to the copper? I see the coupling/quick disconnect behind the reel.

I got a cheap collapsible bucket with lid from Amazon and cut some poly dividers to separate the lines. Pretty easy to flake the line in and it pays out with no tangles. Seems like a durable little container. Climbing arborist, so I usually have 4 or 5 throw lines and a bunch of throwbags and the Big Shot launcher.

Little plug for my favorite eBay seller some of y’all are probably familiar with him, this is legit Teufelberger Dynaglide dyneema throwline, best I’ve ever used. His store has lots of odd lengths for so really low prices.

I used a hose clamp on each side of the reel.

I use a cube or bucket when throwing for presets . A slick way to manage a small throw bag in the tree is to use a chalk reel and this is what I use to maneuver while the canopy. I concur if you can base tie a SRT anchor it is the easiest to set and retrieve you just need more rope. I am still working on my cinched trunk SRT so I don't need to isolate a branch/ crotch and I suck most times with a throw bag. I use an air cannon when I need to get way up a tree but impractical for stealthy hunting situations.

The slingshot brother! I see the reel….I got all this stuff too! Did you flatten the copper pipe and clamp it to the wrist rocket handle? I can kind of see that. What’s under that tape?

Yeah, I guess that makes more sense. I flattened the copper pipe, bent it 90 degrees, put a curve in it to match the shape of the handle and taped it. The slingshot handle is too short for hose clamps but have never had an issue with it loosening up.

So if I set this up, I won’t need a throw ball at all! I can pull my preset paracord over with the fishing line……I found my first tree I want to set up this am!
