So I have seen this done with a similar set up. They left the posts long, and did a high and a low strap. Lil weight, but added stability?
My question- How does the expanded metal work for noise? The ones Ive seen are similar, but with no expanded metal mesh on them. With these-they add paracord for noise and traction. I just acquired an old stand with the metal like yours. Cant hurt for strength/durability. I hate to cut it allll off and smooth it out if I dont have to.
I will probably leave my posts long, add the second strap. Just not sure yet how they will be attached or if a button and rope would work.

I ended up wrapping the entire outer loop with camo 550 cord for grip. Right now I'm using a bulky ratchet strap but with this length post I'm getting zero kick out with side pressure. It never had the expanded metal on top but I like the open top because when I lean it gives me 3 different positions to dig my heels in to change the angle for my feet to get comfy. I threaded a length of tubular webbing down through the post and water knotted it and can sling over my head and shoulder for the walk in and climb up.
