How short did you cut it down too? I cut mine down to 9". Thinking about further if yours works well.

This is why I like this sight so much! Will probably be doing a government project at work tomorrow as I have a few old stands that just haven't made it to the dumpster yet

I got mine done! My friend welded on tree teeth and it's all painted ready to rock! Installed a DIY versa button too.

The post on mine is 5.25”. It works good for me at that length, would probably be slightly more stable at 9” like yours but hacking off 4 inches would definitely save weight.

Also update on the strap situation. I went through a couple different straps, the problem I was having is the hooks were too big for the eyelets on my platform. I was able to get a lone wolf replacement strap, tested it out and it gets plenty tight and holds great after doing a reset. Pleased with that since it is quieter/lighter than a ratchet. You see how I rigged it in the photo above.

Great idea. Those hang on stands cost me $49 at ****'s. If I needed a platform I would do exactly what you did. But I found and even better idea, using the bottom portion of a climber. Weighs 10 lbs. Solves both the climbing problem and the platform problem. Then I just bought an XStand mini X1 climber. Weighs 11 lbs, so I may not even use the saddle much if it the X1 pans out. I'm New to saddles, but here in my yard hanging in my saddle really isn't that comfortable, and not sure o want to be looking at a tree for hours. I prefer facing away from the tree. But we'll see. Like I said I'm new to this.i do see it's advantages.

So I have seen this done with a similar set up. They left the posts long, and did a high and a low strap. Lil weight, but added stability?

My question- How does the expanded metal work for noise? The ones Ive seen are similar, but with no expanded metal mesh on them. With these-they add paracord for noise and traction. I just acquired an old stand with the metal like yours. Cant hurt for strength/durability. I hate to cut it allll off and smooth it out if I dont have to.

I will probably leave my posts long, add the second strap. Just not sure yet how they will be attached or if a button and rope would work.

Leaving the post long would definitely make it more stable. As far as the metal mesh goes that’s something you could remove later if you wanted to. I haven’t had any issues with noise from the mesh myself. Removing the mesh would make it slightly lighter though so there is that to consider.

has ant one tried this.....

Instead of hooking your strap to the RIGHT side, and going around the tree on the RIGHT side to hook to the left... do it this way:

Hook to the LEFT side, cross the post, go around the RIGHT side of the tree, ,, behind the tree, and then hook to the left side after crossing the post again?????

would this reduce kick out from side pressure?

I ended up wrapping the entire outer loop with camo 550 cord for grip. Right now I'm using a bulky ratchet strap but with this length post I'm getting zero kick out with side pressure. It never had the expanded metal on top but I like the open top because when I lean it gives me 3 different positions to dig my heels in to change the angle for my feet to get comfy. I threaded a length of tubular webbing down through the post and water knotted it and can sling over my head and shoulder for the walk in and climb up.
