Welcome to Brandermill Neighbor :)

@bowhuntr09 is just across the reservoir.

Last several years I have hunted with a club out in Buckingham. Urban archery in MIDLOTHIAN is actually contained to a very small area. I have hunted POWHATAN, the state and federal forests out in the western part of the state. I am not gong to hunt the hunt club during gun season this year.

VIRGINIA like a lot of other states has really gone to “pay to hunt system”. It is very hard to get property rights to hunt without paying for it. I used to hunt the reservoir for ducks. I used to hunt where St. Francis is. Send me a pm

Yep, I'm across the water in Woodlake. I used to have permission to hunt where the Round Trey neighborhood is. That was nice having a big tract that close to home. I currently hunt in a club in Amelia with about 3500 acres and have a friend with a little over 100 acres in Lunenberg. I have also hunted Cumberland state forest along with Prince Edward state forest.

Welcome from Cincinnati! Last season was my first with a saddle. I learned a ton and already am working hard to improve my method for next season. I think you’re going to really enjoy saddle hunting. And the guys on this website are awesome! Welcome aboard
Thanks for the warm welcome PastorKen, how did your first season go? Was it a big adjustment? How did you hunt before getting in the saddle?

I’m in the Yorktown area and learning the ropes of both saddle & bow hunting as well! Welcome to the club!

Yeah right down the street. I've been saddle hunting about 4 years now. Got a kestrel and sit drags, let me know if you need any pointers or want to demo some gear. I work in NN so always passing through

Arerhodes, what size Kestrel do you have? Do you prefer the kestrel or the sit drag setup?

Nice, how was the public land hunting? Is it pretty pressured? I'm probably gonna stick to public land and attempt some urban archery if I'm practiced/accurate enough by the season opener. I'm going to try to use the outdoor access app to get some access to local land.

The state forests are much better than the WMA's. Just make sure you get your $20 state forest permit. If you have the opportunity to do weekday hunting I'm sure you could find a spot and probably not see any other people. I haven't done much on public on Saturday during firearms season because its likely to be fairly crowded. Don't forget VA is a deer dog state, so there is that to contend with as well.

I shot a big doe on public land on opening day from the saddle. Quartered and packed out. No problems at all.
Then, in November, I was in the saddle way back on public land in a different county with the biggest buck I’ve ever seen in the woods standing broadside at 20 yards... And I still hate the rest of this story... I was too cold... and had my bow at too high of poundage... shooting to my weak side... and I’m getting older (51)... I couldn’t draw my bow. He was a real good one.
Then I killed a couple does on private land from a treestand. I can only hunt a tiny patch of woods there, so I’ll keep using a hang on stand on that property.
And I took a buck on public land the last day of muzzleloader season in January. I was on foot. Quartered and packed him out. Nothing to brag about. He was so crazy looking I had to shoot him so I could get a closer look at that rotated left side of his rack.
I’m experimenting with buckskin. Hoping to make a few things.
And I’m excited about the adjustments I’m going to be making for next season: Single Muddy Pro stick using the aider-swaider and rappelling out of the tree. And oh yeah, less than 70 pounds on the bow!

Yeah! All that bow poundage doesn’t help when you can’t draw! Haha sorry to hear about that experience but if you were out in nature and you learned something, it sounds like a great day! I’m nervous about trying the wider awaited method, I think I’m gonna put a season or two with the wild edge steps before I get to comfortable/ comfortable! Haha I’m interested in the buckskin as well, I haven’t done anything with pelts. Do you DIY tan? Shoot me a PM if you do, don’t want to get off topic in this forum but I’m interested to learn technique!

Ooh I forgot about the deer hunting. I’m assuming that that mostly happens during the weekend. Thanks for the info about the state forest permit, I wasn’t aware of that. Hopefully the outdoor access app will yield some good lower pressure tracts to skill build on and (if I’m lucky) put some meat in the freezer!

Yeah it sucks getting old. You remember what you used to be able to do and can still do it but sometimes it takes a little longer or in the cold the arthritis kicks in. I noticed the arthritis in my knees this year. Never really bothered me before.

You know you are getting old when AARP sends you a card. Lol. I literally got one in the mail today.
