Weak side shots

Does any body play the wind any more ..and set up for it?the whole shoot 360% would just seem like guess work then
Deer do travel with their back to the wind occasionally or there would be no deer except on the coast of the Pacific Ocean .

My big thing on playing the wind is to not cut across trails if I can help it it. I try to setup so I will be parallel to the wind and the approach.

good job....so she was downwind of you and so you'd think she'd have smelled you but did not?

the downwind/upwind terminology is confusing at time
I heard leaves and all of the sudden there were 5 does within 10 yds over my shoulder about to cross my wind. The wind was blowing pretty good so I think the most of my scent went over them. As they got direct down wind they froze and knew something wasn't right. I drew behind the tree and moved to the up and shot before they bolted.

In this setup I could not have the wind in my face, it was blowing from left to right.

One other thing that was in my favor was that directly behind me I had a hemlock tree that made great cover for deer coming in from the blind side. The hemlock is close enough I lean against it instead of using a back band.

So I actually had a failed encounter with a 4 pts this year due to not understanding the situation. I was using 8 steps on a pretty thin tree so I had plenty of steps to support and pivot. Saw him coming in on my weak side. I try to do what I practiced, move so the tree is blocking me until I was ready to 'peak and shoot'. But I made the mistake of going to the wrong direction, the long way around. So I was fighting gravity. This is one of the few time that attention to details really matter. I follow John Eberhart teaching when I try learning ROS, he make it look so easy. But he set his tether REALLY high and REALLY long. So it is effortless for him to walk around the tree. I set my tether at medium I think? So I have less room to move.

But the real lesson for me that day was to calm down and learn patient. Instead of trying to get into position to shoot at him ASAP. I should of waited and see the route he was taking. Because he walked directly into my strong size if I just waited 30 seconds. He only caught my movement when I try to reposition myself BACK to where I was.

The first deer I ever killed from a saddle was as poorly positioned as a deer could be. She was at my 4:30 coming towards me. I just turned around and shot her.

You just do things. Adrenaline has a way of filtering out noise.

Idk. I rather consider adrenaline a primary contributor to poor shooting. For most shooters it manifests panic.

Creating repeatable scenarios that are practiced until routine helps manage stressors.

Twisting around like Gumby while pumped up like Jason Statham in Crank isn’t the ideal shot scenario for most shooters.

I prefer a large platform.

What he’s saying is that any issues you have with making ANY shot are related to you and what’s in your mind, but when you see a deer you’re going to shoot THAT part of your brain takes over and you position yourself accordingly and take the shot. You don’t think about “am I going to fall?”, “is this how LukeTreewalker69 said to do it”, etc…..you just DO it.

Yes.

Saying that adrenaline removes noise isn’t exclusive of practice or knowing your gear.

Really what I’m saying is stop asking about it on the internet - go bet your buddy you can make a weak side shot in the back yard for an amount of money that hurts to lose.

You’ll see what I mean.

The imaginary you, not any specific you.
